How are y’all getting such good gas mileage? Iam running the Kdmax tune and not seeing those 20 plus mpg… anyway love the tune also how do I achieve max mpg on interstate? I heard turn off adaptive cruise and then so I go s mode ect mode…just curious how to achieve best mpg

There are SO many factors to include when browsing anything MPG related on this forum.... You gotta use some critical thinking.

    • People on the internet want internet points; they may get that once in a while MPG readout when they turn the truck off and take a picture of it - then share it saying "OmG LoOk aT mY ReGuLAR MPGs"
    • everyone's setup and daily drive is vastly different from one another
    • no one Tacoma is exactly the same from the factory, some may never get that fabled MPG value others will
    • the head unit calculates MPG using a formula which isn't 100% true, some people go off this number on the dash, some people actually calculate it
    • Some people (like me) tend to ride our trucks higher in the RPMs (where the powers at, even after tune) ---- bye bye MPGs
    • Judging by the lift and wheels/tires on your ride, you can't compare yourself to a stock boy's truck. That's apples to oranges.
    • using ECT mode AND keeping the truck from utilizing 'overdrive' gears while on the freeway while not towing/hauling/uphill/downhill is only going to decrease MPGs.w

EDIT: I thought I'd add: while I don't tend to look at or pay attention to MPGs in my taco, I have noticed on my drives in to work (early morning, no traffic, all freeway and I've barely woken up so cruise control with radar) I average between 20-24 MPG per the readout on the dash.

That being said.... I don't trust that MPG readout for a lick, I also am KDMax tuned with LT, I run unleaded.

See how little that anecdote helped? :p

My hwy MPG is 18, my city is 16 on the KDMax tune. On the stock tune it was 1-2 mpg less.
I have 33" tires and 2.5" lift. When my truck was totally stock, I got 19-20 on the hwy and 17-18 in city.
I really don't see how these guys get 20+mpg with 33" tires and lifts, but I guess every truck is different because I also hear of guys getting the same as me.
That is the reason we don't claim MPG gains with the tune. ALL TACOMA'S ARE DIFFERENT.
Seems like everything about these trucks is different between trucks. Even the Dyno tests are different from truck to truck.

The way to get a good MPG is to gas up a new tank and then immediately after only drive on freeways and interstates. That should net you above 22+ Mpg average because you have no lower value to being the average down

when you notice the bar on the display being in the lower half, that means your mpg is going to drop a bit. If you notice the bar on the display is in the upper half, that means your average mpg is going to go up a bit soon. This can slightly dictate how you drive in terms of aggressiveness

I get a little too caught up in the mpg mini-game sometimes and just switch the display away from it to give myself a break lol

Finally got to test out the KDMAX version of the ECT button on my 2.5 hour drive up north to the family cabin

I regret having never tried using the button before with the stock ECU to have a basis for comparison to the tune version. From what I’ve heard the stock version did very little, and was barely noticeable

The tune setup I currently have is the midrange KDMAX throttle setting, and then if I hit the ECT button, that bumps me up to the aggressive throttle setting, which I believe is about the highest setting I can do while still using 87 octane gas

So I gave the ECT button a whirl when attempting to pass people going fairly steep uphill. It was definitely noticeable, power on demand, and I actually did most of my passing while going uphill. Granted, I wasn’t towing anything, but still having a mini-turbo button I could push anytime I wanted to gun it made the scenic drive up north that much more enjoyable. I also did not notice any decrease in MPG from using the aggressive setting with the ECT button. So now I want to use it a lot more often around town

I’m going to flash mine back to KDM 7.0 tomorrow now that I have my ECU updated to 04C21. I’ve been running VR again for about 500 miles and while it is a superior tune to stock and OVT, it’s mild. I miss the punch of the KDMax tune.

I realized I posted my experience in the wrong thread originally so posting my experience here.

About 60 miles on truck after tune now.

Immediately noticed the throttle and shifting improvement. I opted for the SLT and was shocked at the improvement it made over the stock throttle feel. About 20 miles in my wife drove the truck and she was immediately impressed with the improvement as well. On the drive home freeway under passes and over passes that it would downshift for before it held the gear and pulled with no trouble.

my wife said she could tell the difference from the passenger seat, she said it often felt like it was struggling.

I did two Dragy pulls this morning on the way to getting tuned. One with AC on the other with it off. I plan on repeating this next weekend after it’s had some time to fully adapt.

overall very happy so far with general drivability. Like others have said it should have been this way before.

Eddie was great to work with and very helpful.
