    Hi ALL
I have a 2017 Tacoma SR5, 6 cyc which has only 28,900 miles on it.
For the past 4+ years when I fill up, the Distance to Empty sets at 385 miles.

Just yesterday, 8-18-21, prior to filling up, the DTE was 323, then I filled up left the
gas station and looked down and it was at 320 and still is going down as I drive!

The DTE NEVER UPDATED but My Gas gauge is pegged FULL!

Curious, not sure what has caused the DTE not to reflect 385 miles but
when/if the DTE hits ZERO, is my truck going to stop and all bells and whistles
going to go off? (god, I hope not!)

    Thanks for Any information!
    Jim

If your MPG's are less then your DTE will be less

sorry, that makes no sense to me. My MPG normally in the city average 26-30, I just took a trip on the HWY and I was
getting 24.1 MPG, so How does the MPG Affect the DTE?

Average mpg times calculated gallons remaining equals distance till empty. If the fuel amount stays the same and the distance till empty goes down, only one thing could have changed, your average mpg. The real question is what they use to determine average mpg. Can tell you I got a lot of calls working for volvo as it only used average last 50 miles driving in that equation which made it move a lot

It estimates distance to empty by using your past 20 miles. So if your past 20 miles changes from the 20 before that, your distance estimates are all wonky.

the computer uses the average MPG in a certain interval (it may be the last 10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, I dont know), then compares it to how much fuel you have in your tank. so if you have been 20 mile per gallon average in the last 10 miles, and you have 10 gallons left in your tank, your Distance to Empty will show as 200 miles.

It will change based on several factors including how you are driving, and the terrain. if you're driving down a long hill, the DTE may go up. if you're on a flat road for a long time, and then go up a long steep hill, your DTE will go down.

    Hope that makes sense.

Let's say you have 10 gallons in the tank and you're getting 10 MPG. You have 100 miles until empty.

Let's say you have 10 gallons in the tank and you're getting 30 mpg. You have 300 miles until empty.

This is how MPG affects DTE.

Say you get 20 mpg average and truck thinks you have 15 gallons of fuel. Distance to empty will display 300 mile range. Say you go offroading and bring that average down to 14mpg. With the same 15 gallons of fuel, your truck will display 280 mile range. In either circumstance it is just an estimate. The only question is what "average mpg"toyota uses. Lifetime? Last 1000 miles? Last 100iles?

Where volvo would be weird is they used last 50 mile average which varies a lot. Say you drive around in city and get 20 mpg. Go get gas to leave town on a trip. Full tank has 20 gallons of fuel. Range says 400. You go drive on highway for a couple hours. Now you are averaging 30mpg. But you have been driving so you have less fuel in the tank, let's say 15 gallons. That display would now read 450. Is isnt wrong, it is just a different equation.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
When DTE goes to 0 (zero) nothing happens other than a message to "Fill up now."
As many have noted, DTE is an estimate. Exactly how the truck determines it is beyond me, and I really don't care.
The only "DTE" gauge I rely on is the one in the lower right below the speedometer.

Also to answer this part, no its not, you'll probably just a message that says to fill up and a light on the fuel gauge. probably will get it when it hits like 30-50 miles until "empty."

My DTE is always 280ish after a fill up, then yesterday for no good reason it came up with this number. Idk how or why…but there’s no way in hell I’m going to get 400 miles8E1FB3A8-106C-47EC-9B44-AE3D3ADA05EA.jpg

Wow hahaha. Mine used to be 385 but after a trip 5000 plus miles road trip to Carmel Indiana and back it’s now 305 . Never went back to 385 even after a month of driving here.
