Flashing A/C light. Yes I checked everything. Just have a question.

2014 tacoma trd 4.0 auto.
So I checked the resister and replaced the relay to the pump.
Clutch engages but no cold air.
I am a retired HVAC tech and have the proper gauges. The gauge I hooked to the LOW side does not move when A/C turned on or off. Did not connect the high side as adapter had a bad o ring.

My question is since I can see the clutch hook up and spin, can I assume the shaft is broken off going into the pump since the gauges don't move? Just want to make sure I didn't miss something that could cause this.

I just got back from the shop and they agree the pump is not turning inside.
OH JOY
Time for a new pump and all the associated BS needed with it.
There goes the money for the new front bumper.

 

Could be a unique situation here, most of us don't have pumps, we have compressors.

When it comes to A/C, I’m not too good.
I’m better off closing the hood and letting someone else figure it out for me.

Is the center part of the clutch turning? Sometimes the rubber damper will separate from the clutch and the clutch will engage but the compressor still won't turn.

 

Compressors are pumps. They pump refrigerant around in circles.

 

Everything up front appears to be turning including the center. That is what I was looking for to start with.

If it's all turning but not pumping then yea the compressor is done.
Make sure if the oil is full of metal that you replace the condenser, expansion valve screen, and probably the valve in addition to the compressor and flush the lines and evaporator really good.

 

They are usually the same thing.

 

The refrigerant and oil look great. Already replacing the filter/condenser as well as full flush, vacuum and refrigerant replacement.

 

Are you sure you're hooking up the gauge correctly?

 

Well as stated is the center of the compressor is turning when the clutch engages and there is no pressure the obvious is the compressor is shot. Seems the OP is on the right path.

If they weren't hooked up correctly they wouldn't show any pressure. I have great pressure it just doesn't change when the pump/compressor turns on.

 

Low side should be 100+ psi when off and high will be low like 50psi or so. Once the compressor kicks on, the low will drop to 30-35psi and high around 220ish.

I checked this in 95* weather the other day and overfilled it a bit, reading at 40psi with ac on high. I just took out enough for the ac to blow really cold (35psi)

You need to read high side as well for it to be accurate.

 

Retired HVAC tech would know that. So would a good mechanic.

 

FWIW I had the flashing AC button issue for a while and it would come and go randomly the cold would stop but the clutch was engaged etc, only correlation I could make is that I could force it to happen about 50% of the time by driving through a big puddle which got mw thinking it was a slip detected issue, pretty sure it was.


Also it would take a good hour of driving after disconnecting the battery for it to start blowing cold.

While obviously not the case in your instance as an independent shop verified pump failure my issue ended up being a worn out belt tensioner.

I had no other symptoms of a loose belt no squeals no over heating seemed okay when testing it but I replaced my idlers and tensioner and the issue went away, haven't seen it since and the AC comes on within a few short minutes after a battery disconnect.

 

And any HVAC tech know a compressor is a pump and they are called both. Try and keep up.

 

Those pressures are only good at 95*. If it's 75* those pressures will be lower. The gauges have the correct temp to pressure conversion right on them.
To charge a system properly you need both a high and low gauge connected but to check if the pump is working you only need 1. If the pressure doesn't change when you turn on the compressor it's not working.
