2nd gen Brake plug-and-play brake tap

It's a first gen thing: Bulbs used have dual grounds; only one is needed, the other is "shared". One point ground to all rear lights.

Hey there @Puppypunter. I'm interested in a basic brake tap. Just out of curiosity, have you done any install videos?

 

I have not done an install video. I could do that, but I have to find someone with a 2nd gen. These are really straight forward though. I will shoot you a PM tomorrow to see if you still need one.

 

I just installed mine like a week ago. There’s only one way the connectors can plug in. Once you have the tail light assembly out it becomes very clear what plugs into what

 

I kind of figured that, I just get nervous with electrical stuff lol.

 

Check out YouTube on how to remove taillight, couple of bolts and gently pull. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to play it safe. The tail light connectors are a little tough to get separated at first but be gentle and slowly work them apart. These plug and play harnesses have connections that perfectly match the OEM ones and feel well built and are designed so it’s impossible to connect backwards or in wrong orientation. Just be careful with the wire strands when reinstalling tail light so you don’t pinch them or crimp them with the back of the light assembly.

Sub'd. Will be needing one of these for my Super Pacific Camper.

 

There isn't a constant 12v in the taillight connector, however you can wire it where only the LEDs only has power whenever your parking lights are on.

Sorry to ask, but did the thought about creating a plug-and-play harness for the first gen tail light come to fruition? I read through both the 2nd and 3rd gen threads but couldn't see a place where the 1st gen harness had been created by the wizard(s) behind the other (gorgeous) harnesses. Similar to others, I have a camper shell with a third brake light and am reluctant to start splicing into the connectors behind the tail light if it can be helped. Could take pictures of the 1st gen wiring/connectors if that would be instructive.

 

Thought it would be helpful to also provide pictures of the various plugs down in the back of the tail light assembly. I'm fairly lost in terms of what goes where or how you would build a plug in that would allow for a connection out to the third brake light. The last two pictures are of the connector that comes down from the shell and connects to not only the third brake light but also three dome lights with switches (less concerned about those working since I have a headlamp etc.)

There is a harness sold on eBay (link) and also one that looks pretty comprehensive on another store (link). The second link appears to be for a trailer wiring harness, which I already have up under the rear bumper, but maybe some of the parts overlap. Would be grateful for any guidance or links to how others have done it cleanly (whenever time allows of course).

 

Ok, this is doable. That looks like a Sumitomo 250 armlock connector.

I have some terminals for that (Subaru’s use them too, the will be my first foray into the 1st Gen world), but will need to get some housings. If you are willing to get me a full pin out of it, I will make you one for your time also, am I mistaken in looking at that first picture, there is a small female to female (the gender on plugs is from the terminal, not the housing. The housing most people would call a male)? Is that on both sides? That would be an ideal spot to replicate if so. I could build a female to female, and just add the taps on one side of it.
