When I carry a 1911, it's cocked and locked. Drawing from concealed, that's right around 1 second from beginning to an alpha hit. When I carry the Kahr, the long double action trigger is the safety- just like a revolver.

You will never understand Canuck. Most of us that do carry or believe in guns and do it because we want to preserve our Constitution and our rights.
    I believe its patriotic.

I was thinking the same thing..... but again, I'm new to the carry thing. Maybe after some time carrying, some practice quick drawing & firing (snap cap) - I'll have a different mindset.

In watching a lot of TV shows & reading, the criminal is the one who has the element of surprise in most cases. If he's got a gun pointed at me and he knows he's going to kill me anyway.....If I try to pull a gun out of my pocket (per say), I'm already dead. Physically disarming him (with physical self defense methods) is probably my best shot until I have time to get the gun out.
Theoretically anyway.... It's a world full of thoughts & encounters... and one can never be prepared for everything. I gotta get some classes!!

I wouldnt recomend trying to disarm a enemy in the streets. if he isnt strung out on drugs and retarted he will have one chambered and ready to rock with his finger on the trigger. one false move and bang....its done for you. But usually they dont know how to properly "brandish" and use there firearm.

You should not be pulling a weapon unless you ARE going to fire upon the threat.

You are right- If a criminal is holding a gun on you- You aren't going to be able to draw before he fires. But I'd say you have a pretty good chance to get your weapon out without being in the other guys sights. With the exception of a carjacking or mugging....and even those you might have time depending on your skill set.

^Couldn't have said it better myself

This is the only way to carry concealed with a "no safety" pistol.

By the time you evaluate the threat it may be too late to rack the slide. If anyone has a problem with carrying hot, then they should either get a revolver or a pistol that allows for a "cocked and locked" set up. It's easier to just flip a safety when a threat presents itself.

I carry a S&W 642 with an 11-pound trigger pull for that very reason, although I have thought about picking up a short-barrel .45 for a round capacity and firepower upgrade. I previously carried an XD9 with no safety, but it was a little cumbersome on the job as compared to the revolver.

Pocket carry is a great option in my opinion, because you can disguise your intentions up until the time you must act. You can even flip a safety when in your pocket.

And as Whitebread mentioned, good gun safety technique (finger off the trigger) and practice, practice, practice will get you comfortable carrying cocked.

Im also new to carrying but not to guns. I have been shooting bb guns since i could hold it and then once dad felt comfortable i moved up to the guns that go bang. My carry piece is a S&W MP9c with no safety. I keep one in the chamber. I still need to get a IWB holster for day to day use instead of the owb one i have now that i carry when i go into the woods since my clothing choice does not conceal OWB very well. One requirement I have is the leather on top needs to be doubled over or have a second piece stitched on and it has to cover the trigger guard completely.

However, that is going to have to wait till I get home because colleges are very against carrying... which I will refrain from going into right now

I almost never have a round chambered until I am ready to fire. The previous story about dropping the gun, it going off and hitting somebody wouldn't happen with me, there is no round under the firing pin.

The "Chunk-Chunk" also gets their attention.

You are also much, much likely to get into an auto accident than to have to use your gun. Rather than depending on the safety(ies) keeping the weapon from discharging under the impact it can't fire because there is nothing under the firing pin.

I've trained and practiced to charge the weapon as I draw. With practice it doesn't take ANY more time but it definitely provides that extra element of safety.

i dont care how much you train...it adds time to rack the slide...it also requires both hands

my pistols are pointed at my target as the end of the barrel breaks from the holster and theyre ready to rock and roll at that split second

I agree, however if someone were to see and alert the police then I would be screwed. Those are some mean charges you are lookin at

But the thing that startles you and makes you draw may appear less threatening after a second of critical thought...

I will defend myself and my family but I'm not going to rot in jail for a bad shoot...I believe it is the responsible thing to do...

Also, I don't have as much faith in any weapons' functionality...There's a reason why the military has clearing barrels...Chambering and clearing a weapon offers an opportunity for the slightest problem to turn into a launched round...In my neck of the woods an accidental discharge - anywhere in the city is going to get me in serious trouble....

Doesn't take two hands...press the top of your piece against your side (around jean pocket level - so the rear sight catches on your pocket) push in and down...that way you can defend with one hand if you have to and still chamber...

you're still having to add in a step...and most everyone out there if caught in the situation where you are having to defend yourself is going to have a huge rush of adrenaline...at that point in time you're going to be operating on gross motor skills and thats it

i dont want any extra added steps to defending myself draw - point - bang
