Did the previous owner disable this or did I just get lucky?

I am not used to a vehicle that doesn't chirp or sound the horn on the second press of the remote to lock the vehicle.

You can turn the chirp on and off - if you search around on the site wither in 2nd gen or tech discussion I think there are a couple of threads on the subject

I had the locking/unlocking beep, as well as the chime for the seatbelt. But, due to the outstanding info on this site I found, I created a document that outlines how to remove them both. This worked for my 2011 DC TRD Sport.

Disable seat belt chime - Tacoma

    1) Turn the Car 'ON', but do not start the engine (Leave your foot off the brake). Cycle your trip reset knob until it reads ODO. Turn the ignition back off. Wait a couple of seconds.
    2) Make sure seat belt is not fastened
    3) Turn the ignition back on, do not start the car (Leave you foot off the break) As soon as you see everything light up, press and hold the trip reset knob and do a long 12 second count.
    4) Keep your finger on the trip reset knob. Fasten your seat belt, as soon as you fasten your seat belt, you should see the ODO display go from XXXX miles to "b-on". At that time take your finger off the trip reset knob and press it again. It should cycle to "b-off". You should be all set and turn the ignition off and unfasten your seat belt.

ENABLE OR DISABLE DOOR LOCK BEEP CHIME

    (a) Open the driver side door and insert the key into the ignition cylinder.
    (b) Remove the key from the ignition cylinder and, within 5 seconds, reinsert the key and turn the ignition switch to ON.
    (c) After 10 seconds, the system enters answer-back buzzer switching mode.
    (d) Within 10 seconds after answer-back buzzer switching mode is started, if a transmitter button (the same button) is pressed twice, the answer-back buzzer setting changes (off to on, or on to off) to activate or disable answer-back by buzzer.

HINT: The driver side door is closed.

A quick and easy method is to just remove the "chirper" ..... up by the battery.

    Taped off harness end ....

the chirp is standard on all toyotas with keyless entry (over 50% of the cars here are toyotas and its a cacophony of chirps everywhere). It is defeated physically or by turning it off.. combination of holding trip button and turning on car in a certain fashion.

My '06 never chirped and I was happy about that. Just got an Avital alarm and it chirps, but I guess the point is that lurking thieves know you are arming the vehicle.

haha i have an avital also ... one nice thing is if you dont want to chirp it, (in my case when i go to get another beer after the girl is asleep), you just hit the trunk button then the lock / unlock.

My 05 doesn't chirp either. But I do have the oem alarm. It's the VIP one and the blinking red light and glass sensor is in the middle blank underneath all the top buttons. Can someone confirm if am able to turn on a chirp?

05 thru 09(?) do not chirp with lock/unlock. That feature was added in later models.

I have an 08 and it did not have the "chirp" feature. I added a Peizo buzzer to make mine chirp when I lock it. There's a DYI mod thread in here somewhere. You can get the buzzer at Radio Shack for about $10. The mod should only take about 20 minutes.

not to many, love it the way it is
When I click the lock/unlock button on the key chain clicker there is a beep/chirp. I found the little lock/unlock chirper under the hood and put a piece of black electrical tape over the speaker hole and it still chirps just not very loud like before. It was just a little loud for my taste before but now is much better :)
