Someone else went through this on here recently and Toyota ended up replacing the rear axle assembly.

I converted my CJ to four wheel discs. It’s a bit more tricky to get the braking properly balanced. But on. Four wheel drive it’s possible to have rear locking hubs. Not necessary but handy.

I am sure that the Mexican/Albanian/Burmese/etc. foundries and machine shops, supplying auto manufacturers, only use the purest source metals and have meticulous QA/QC processes in place……..

Out of curiosity I looked to see if I could find where the Tacoma's drums are made.

Actually some are ISO facilities and do produce quality products. ISO rating is hard to get, easy to loose, and quite worth it to have. Some companies will only deal with ISO suppliers. The only country I ever had any issues with ISO rated facilities was China. But they don't care.

‘We have six vehicle plants, located in France (Yaris), the UK (Corolla), Turkey (Toyota C-HR and Corolla), the Czech Republic (Aygo), Russia (Camry and RAV4) and Portugal (Land Cruiser for export). We also have engine and transmission manufacturing facilities in Poland and the UK. Not only do these supply local markets, they also produce vehicles that are exported around the world.’

They always talk about their ‘assembly’ and ‘manufacturing’ facilities wrt specific vehicles or component systems (as if a former Soviet bloc RAV4 is a good idea…). They almost never talk about parts, and they sure as shit never talk about where the raw materials for the parts come from. These supply chains run deep, ain’t nobody tracking down every last bolt or brake drum, never mind the plate it was stamped out of, or the ingot it was rolled from. US end-user parts quality has been in steady decline since the early 2000’s, across all sectors, as a consequence of expanded global commerce. Post COVID, it’s only gonna get worse, for a number of reasons.

I'm reading replays here and it seems you have some sort of chauvinistic approach to "unknown" issue with OP drums.
    Soviet block, Ukraine, Albania....?

Because no one knows how to arc brake shoes to drums anymore they should have replaced the shoes when the replaced the drums.

At 13k you should'nt have to arc shoes. That practice made sense when people turned drums, but who does that anymore?

    ‘course…

everybody has skipped over the long standing and well known axle seal leak problem…

couple drops of oil, smokes, shoe grabs, shoe glazes, next stop: evidence gets smoked, repeat.

in the beginning, it can be hard to detect.

the seal is fairly delicate and must be installed carefully and perfectly centered/seated.

And you shouldn't have to replace drums either at 13k, right? And who turns drums anymore :)

While I agree that it sucks that the OP is having this issue with his brake drums....lets not forget that this is certainly not the normal case for these trucks. People start jumping on the bandwagon ranting about what this world is coming to and in reality most of us will never experience this same problem. Lets not all start throwing Toyota under the proverbial bus because of an unusual issue with someone else's vehicle. My shop foreman here (Michigan's oldest Toyota dealer) said he has never seen the described issue with any Toyota, let alone the Tacos. So keep that in mind before you start ripping on Toyota about something you've never even seen yourself. Unfortunately, sometimes a bad apple still makes it to the market.

I honestly think that's the standard service writer answer. "We've never seen this happen before" I don't care what brand it is, they've never seen it happen. I mean never mind the pallets of blown up Eco Boosts, MaxxForce, and stacks of rusty Toyota frames

My 2nd and 3rd gen tacomas both warped the rear drums. My 2nd gen has done this twice now. My co-workers 3rd gen has done the same thing but his did it super early, like 5k miles from new. I do find a few good hard stops from highway speed to 0 seems to make it go away for a little bit.

My 2nd gen had 60k on it when I bought it and had zero brake pulsation issues. Stock brakes. 15k later I started getting a shake in the rear end while braking. I had my local mechanic toss a set of new drums on and it was good for another 10-15k. I had him dial indicate the rear axle flanges and nothing is bent.

It doesn't help that my commute is 15 miles of 60mph stop and go. Everyone drives crazy on this stretch of the road so hard braking is fairly common.
