So my Tacoma turns on recirculate every time I hit the AC button. This is the only vehicle that I have owned that has ever done this… is there a reason for that ?

Also does the Tacoma still filter the outside air when it’s not on recirc?

we have some major fires here in NorCal and my other vehicles seem to be filtering out the outside air to a point where I don’t smell the smoke but not so much on the Tacoma.
(I did upgrade to the coal filter) and it seems much better than the factory coffee filter.

You can manually turn recirc off. If you have the A/C set to max cold it will automatically turn recirc on. It's much harder to cool hot outside air so recirc is used.

I don’t have a max cold button. It’s factory useless dual zone system. So I just toggle ac on when I need it as I do with all my other vehicles. Yet this is the only one that then toggles on recirc.

When you turn it to cold, the AC computer sees what the outside temp is, what the inside temp is and what you set on the dial, then it decides if RECIRC is needed or not.

That decision is instant here in Texas.

I can say it makes no difference what the outside temp is or what the A.C. temp is set on. Everytime the a.c. is switched on it defaults to recirculating. First veh. I have ever had that does it.
I am guessing Toyota has a reason for that?
Not too many years ago, if you left it on recirc. then your windows would fog up. What have they done differently?
My A.C. gets cold enough to hang meat so no complaints.

Recirc will automatically turn off after a bit, depending on the setting.

All incoming air is filtered, but the stock filter is very poorly sealed around the edges. I bought the K&N version to fix that.

Mine stays on all the time unless I turn it to defrost. Even if I turn the defroster on, when I turn it back to the regular AC (not max) it turns recirc back on again.

I don't know if it's supposed to do that, but my wife is big on recirc, so I have to pay attention to it.

Why is everyone turning off recirculation when having the A/C on? This is the 3rd or 4th thread I've seen this in. Again everyone is saying this is the first vehicle they have had that automatically turns that setting on. I'm not saying they are wrong, I am just having a hard time seeing it. I have a 2006 sierra that auto turns it on with A/C, and I venture to guess it also does it on the earlier GMT800 as well.

Guess the long and short is, why is everyone turning it off?

I'm not turning it off unless the truck does it automatically in defrost mode.

I guess every vehicle is different. My wife's 2008 Highlander wouldn't keep ot on unless you held the button down for 3 seconds. Now her 2018 Highlander is like my Tacoma and she doesn't have to do that to keep it on all the time. The defroster is the only thing that kicks it off.

Anyway, that's just us. Can't testify to what everyone else's vehicle is like...

My 2015 Tacoma was the first vehicle I ever owned where it automatically came on.

Lots of head scratching info in here.

The recirculation setting on the dual zone (which is fantastic, BTW) automatically comes on under certain conditions. If you hit "auto" when the outside temp (and presumably interior temp/humidity) are in the right conditions (maybe 50° or so) the recirculation won't come on.

Recirculation is also far more efficient for your AC, especially when it is hot outside.

Also, if your windows fogged up with recirculation on then your AC is not working since the primary reason the truck defaults to having the AC on with the automatic setting is to help dry out the air. (in addition to greater temperature control). This is also the exact reason your AC comes on with the defroster. Actually most vehicles don't even advertise that the AC is running with the defroster because it is automatic.

If when running AC your windows sometimes fog up, or you have recirc off because you want fresh air, or if you get drips of water on the passenger side at times, you’re doing it all wrong.
