Looks great, would you mine sharing what sprayer and paints you use.

 

This is all Van Sickle (VS) paint from Atwood's with their urethane hardener. Thinner was V&M Naptha. The yellow is vinyl car wrap material.

Stripped to bare metal on top (visible) surfaces (bottom sanded with 80gr) with my weed burner and a scraper, sand with 80gr paper. Coat of VS etching primer followed by a coat of VS spray can yellow primer on the yellow body parts--only etching primer on the black. Sprayed the black with my 20y/o Harbor freight siphon feed touch up gun. Sprayed the yellow stuff with a HF purple gun--which i feel is inferior to my siphon feed Sharpe and also my tiny touch up gun.I don't like the gravity guns I've used. They don't spray wet enough for me.

What do you use cleaner wise on the metal after stripping prior to primer?

Curious, have you tried sand blasting? I know you would need a larger enclosure than a cabinet on those large pieces.

 

My compressor doesn't have the CFM for blasting. The thin body parts needed about 3 seconds of heating to bubble the paint. That hitch was thick so it took a ton more time. I think I had the hood stripped in way less time than a blaster would take.

I washed the bare metal with purple degreaser, dried and wiped with Toluene. Wiped with Naptha before finish coat. Fully dried Primer was wiped with Naptha if it had sat for several days or was sanded.

 

Oh, I was in full gear--respirator with carbon cartridges, Tyvek suit, hood and gloves for all the finish coat hardener added painting. Isocyanate in it is very toxic.

VS has 2 hardeners though. One is urethane and has isocyanate, the other does not but is not urethane.

Yeah I think of blasting the corners/tight sections, the heat and scrape method looks amazingly fast to do on the large flat areas.

 

Absolutely. I would have loved to get in those nooks and crannies with a blaster. they gave me fits. One thing I discovered on this that I love and grab before anything else now is my mini angle-die grinder fitted with a 3" velcro backer. I buy 80grit pads from Amazon fairly cheap. It knocks paint off like nothing else I've used and is cheap to use. No clogging the paper like other things I've used for some reason. i have a little flow valve on the fitting to slow it down. I also finish up with a HF mini DA sander with the factory 2" pad changed to a 3".

 

My welder and mower both have Kohlers, they are a bear to start after sitting a while. My welder, I've had to choke it every time I start it from the day I brought it home brand new 20 years ago.

 

On those smaller motors, Honda fan boy all day long

 

I wouldn’t worry about engine hours on a tractor, the motor is the last thing to go on them.

 

Covid gear?

 

Actually more than my Covid gear. Y'all probably dont know I work in a hospital doing physical therapy. I work in Covid ICU 3 days a month face to face with Covid patients.
