Engine Oil Cap

I was changing my oil the other day and I was underneath the truck when I realized I didn’t remove the engine oil cap to release some vacuum in order for it to drain quicker. So, what do I do? I asked my wife to remove it for me. She proceeds to unscrew the cap and immediately drops it. Has anyone ever tried to find that black cap in an all black engine bay?!?! I couldn’t believe how long it took me to find that sucker, lol.

Well, its going to be some time before my wife helps me with anything to do with the truck. Apparently my disgust about her dropping the cap was obvious. Can’t believe there isn’t an option for a fluorescent colored cap or one that has a tether attached to it. I’ll probably affix a tether to it for that one time when we are out traveling and have to add a little oil and drop it to find it rolling away down a bank or something, lol. I’d prefer not to be stranded somewhere remote without a cap. Easy fix I reckon.

 

I dropped it in the engine bay one time, looked all over nowhere to be found. Pulled the skid plate and low and behold was laying in the bottom of the fan shroud...

If you ever loose your cap though, Toyota only makes 2 styles.

Mines off a '70 something.

 

Did you every drop a nut or bolt in the engine bay and quickly look under the truck and it's a oh shit moment when it's not there .

Don't ever drop a critical bolt, screw or a 10 mm socket.

These things grow high speed legs before impacting the ground, then run to the farthest corner of the garage under the most difficult object to move while remaining just out of reach..............

 

Interesting. That’s where I found mine. I guess they all go to the same place, lol. Good to know!

 

there is a single edge razor blade lurking in my bench area in the garage. if it dropped and hit edge on, it could be anywhere. i am sure i will find in the most painful way.

I’d be interested to really see how much time it saves doing this. Not that it’s wrong, but I don’t always remove mine. Isn’t the crankcase vented? I’d be surprised if it helped drain any quicker.

 

Well Dr Dirty- You are making an assumption and your assumption just might not be the reason why “I” release a bit of vacuum when I drain my oil. It has everything do with flow and the possibility of removing contaminants that otherwise might not escape during slower flows. A few seconds here or there is actually not something that interests me. Better, not quicker is what I’m shooting for.

 

About the only thing you can do at this point is apologize to the wife for putting her in such a precarious situation. In her eyes anyway lol. Glad you found it at least.

 

Well mrquibbe, I assumed you were doing it because you said that you “removed it to release some vacuum in order for it to drain quicker.” I’m not being a dick and telling you it’s bad form, I’m legitimately asking if it really makes a difference. It may save a few seconds. I would think most contaminants would be caught by the filter, but my wife tells me I’m wrong all the time so maybe she’s right.

I would think whatever "vacuum" it needed would be compensated by the fresh air side of the pcv. Honestly, not too sure tho.

 

What you're actually doing by opening the cap is letting atmospheric pressure (gravity) push down everything for you, nice work

And more velocity should help with that too

I dropped the cap on my wife's old 2006 Honda Odyssey and spent almost a hour to get it back out.
In addition one day, I had to put a new radiator in my old 1979 chevy truck. Finishing up, warming it to full temp in the shop to check for leaks. Reach over to open the throttle linkage a bit, bump snap-on flank drive 9/16 wrench. Falls into fan, slings fork end first into the brand new radiator I could barely afford, cuts two cores open.
Pouring coolant out, I reach under the truck and grab the wrench mad, and sling it at the wall. It just misses the metal and hits the insulation, then falls down in between the inner and outer skin of the building. So I crimped off those two cores, and to this day that wrench is in the wall there. I replaced it with a mac wrench so the set doesn't match, but every time I use that set I remember, don't be a dipwad and knock stuff off.

 

get thee by a car audio stero shop

get thee to the thrash bin where old speakers are thrown away

grab a few 6x9s or 10 inchers

those in microwave oven are great

remove very powerful magnets

stick 1 to tool box so U will have it later

stick 1 to firewall where there ar NO devices

get for picking up screws / bolts / need bearings

not so much plastic & alum

 

Is this a legit Oem cap? This on a third gen ?
