Well fellers, by now it should be apparent that occasionally the things I buy aren't all that practical...

In this latest installment of "what the heck did rusty drag home" I have corrected this.

It has been hot so I bought an air conditioner -- (...wait for it...)

-- built about 1952. I found an advertisement.

The stickers remind me of a famous unicorn truck. :boink: The round grill turns 360 degrees (by hand) to direct the air how you want.
    KIMG1606.jpg

Lift the metal lid to access the controls and filters.
    KIMG1620.jpg

Naturally I needed my elderly helper to unload, this thing probably weights 120 pounds.
    KIMG1614.jpg

As this hadn't operated for unknown years (decades) a bit of cleanup/inspection/lubrication was in order.
    KIMG1616.jpg

Compressor contact, maybe people were smart enough back then to not take the cover off and touch things?
    KIMG1617.jpg

It doesn't have a thermostat - just a cool position and high & low for the fan. The exhaust position runs the condenser fan only and is used with the door in the exhaust position.
    KIMG1623.jpg

This door opens to the outside in two positions - ventilate and exhaust. There is a screen to keep critters out. Closed when cooling.
    KIMG1626.jpg

The indoor (evaporator) fan, there is a coil on each side along with a mesh filter.
    KIMG1625.jpg

    Plug not polarized or grounded.
    KIMG1632.jpg

Wiring diagram, back when folks fixed appliances. Notice the monster of a compressor lurking in the background. It is mounted on coil springs too.
    KIMG1627.jpg

So I plugged her in --

    -- from a distance --

    -- and --

    Let 'er rip tater chip!

Running with the cover off here in the garage it is quieter than the modern unit in my living room.

So there, I bought something practical -- as practical as a 120 pound, 69 year old air conditioner gets.

Need to be a big sturdy window. It is 26" wide and 16" high. :benchpress:

The fork lift is my do all helper, I use it for all kinds of things here. Just need to stay off the grass, the times I have thought "it is just a couple feet, shouldn't get stuck...". Yeah, it doesn't work that way...

Ah, so more of a split unit than a window unit.

It is all in one like a modern window unit, just giant and heavy for a 9000 btu machine.

I would sure split something it I tried to pick it up off the floor.

Guessing it might make the old electric meter spin a skootch faster than a modern unit...

Update: I found an advertisement for my new unit from 1952.

About 16 amps full load so just about double a modern unit of similar capacity -- just like the size and weight.

What I found unusual is that there in no thermostat, when you set it to cool the compressor comes on and stays on. The evaporator fan has a high and low setting but the compressor runs constantly. I have found units from the 60's that had thermostats just like the modern units.

Slender and stylish 1952 lady in her air conditioned bedroom.

The list was basically inclusionary, not exclusionary and nowhere in any of the regulations were goats even mentioned, which is kind of odd I think. Can't be that they'd let me start breeding them and keeping 20 goats around. As far as nosey neighbors, the neighbor I see all the time next door has no problem with it, the other is a single (divorced/separated) guy who works 2 jobs and is basically never home. The level of neglect of his back yard would make it laughable if he decided to start making calls on me. He could actually use some goats to clean his yard up lol.

That some cool stuff Rusty. I recall a former coworker telling me about the days before or before many people could afford a refrigerator. There was a place where you would go and buy a large block of ice to keep goods cool.

Up until the early 1930's when refrigerators became affordable and reliable every town had an "ice man" who came around daily. There is a family business in town that sells bagged ice, 5 or 6 generations ago they delivered ice with a horse drawn wagon.

I remember when I was a kid the old folks talking about the ice man and how women delivered the ice, coal and other items during World War 1. It was a big deal for ladies to be driving trucks back then.
