I agree, they are definitely boost friendly. Just a little bit and they come to life. I have the balance shaft delete sitting in a box but I haven’t done it. I probably should have when I had the timing cover off last, but I was in a scramble to get my daily back on the road. Are the balance shafts on the 2tr a failure point if you’re pushing the stock bottom end?

LCE said it's the first failure point. As a dd you could probably just change it out when you decide you want more. Few pulls a day I'm sure won't stress it. Not sure how bad the vibes are. I'm sure it's holds up fine for day to day use. Banging gears and bouncing off the rev limiter is your deal then you pushing good luck.

I wanna say Kurt on CT left his in until he built the motor

My understanding is these are a problem at much higher rpm- if keeping same or only slightly higher rpm then not a problem. If I'm wrong please correct me.

That was my understanding from my 3RZ days.

the balance shafts spin at 2x crankshaft RPM.

There you go that makes sense. Imagine 14-16k rpm balancer.

Gotcha, thanks for mentioning that, I did some reading on that earlier, very cool build he’s got going

Thanks for the info. I’m keeping the stock 5500 rev limiter for now so I think I’ll leave these alone for the time being until the timing cover needs to come back off

For those 3rd gen's looking for oVTune TT, the latest is that, due to parts shortages, it will be 2022 before any new sales. On the upside, for those already purchased, he is shipping the next one Monday. Expecting more to follow, weekly. One more lucky customer! Can't wait to get mine.

I see your signature has turbo build specs, is your Tacoma already turbo?

@RedLantern, OK, now am hooked on reading your build. I see it is a 2nd gen for that build, very nicely done. Your Bio lists the 2019, so that tripped me up till I got into your build thread.

Haha thanks. I wish I was able to complete my 2nd gen build, but it still lives on with another member here. It was about time I’d actually purchase something new for myself and something not 2nd hand and the 3rd Gen has started to grow on me. Then boom, saw the TT ovtune thread get created and that’s where I committed to buying one. Hopped on to be the first 25 to purchase a kit as soon as I could.

You ordered power max or base kit?

Interesting, I’m wondering if I need to still purchase those 02 Cats you mentioned prior.

If you end up with a tune that disables them, then I suppose not.

I was so close to having no CEL with the rear o2's still turned on, and someone else had said that they don't have CELs for the o2's, so it's definitely possible with this kit. Maybe my specific kit just wasn't destined to run without the CEL intermittently returning lol

Haha. I guess I’ll find out. He’s sending me both catted and non catted downpipes so I’m sure he’ll account for it. I just hope down time isn’t too long.

I have Power max with fuel upgrade, coming. Though I was still catching up on reading the thread, when the initial kits were offered; so I missed initial sale by a couple weeks. I lucked out though, and purchased the kit from TW @TheTacoChrist. Was a great purchase, and he shipped me the URD aluminum radiator, Electric fan, Mts & controller, Blankets, plugs, and Lexus injectors. I had already purchased VFTuner (though have yet to install a tune). The Turbo transaction was authorized by Matt, both before and after, so is just a matter of time. I an grateful and fortunate!

Has been 30 years since my last performance mod, and will be my first Turbo mod. Been reading EVERYHTING. Coffee table covered with turbo and tuning books, plus the wealth of knowledge here. Is coming together.

Maybe you have an opinion; my latest challenging decision regards exhaust. It must be 304 SS, so URD seems to be the option, but there are two ways to go there. They offer a direct replacement Y-Pipe to 3", and a separate cat-back in 3" to complete a set. Or for similar money, they offer the Spec-U complete system, which has a nice write-up of equal length pipes to the Y, and crosses over behind the T-case instead of under it, and they say the equal length has a great sound (European Exotic), but here the Y and tailpipe are 2-3/4" not 3". I have aspirations for 400hp, and research indicates 3-1/2" preferred. Not sure which one to buy? Hesitate to make my own exhaust, at this point, but maybe down the road. Happy to hear opinions on this.

You can make a ton of power with 3” exhaust. Supra’s and other vehicles use 3” that make way more than your power goal.

I have the Urd spec-U on my truck but modified. Went this route because it’s something bolt on and wanted something I could revert back to stock. Also the spec-u has an extra bung so you could put an o2 for AFR gauge.

I’ll try to get photos of it. It has a resonator built in at the Y.

here’s photos of the Urd spec u out of the box.

I replaced the muffler it came with with a black widow muffler. I bought 3” exhaust tubing and basically used exhaust clamps to join them to make up the difference in length.
