Definitely not SAE fog lights :)

What pattern lighting do you see that as? Spots and driving?

The in-car shots show an interesting pattern. Lots of foreground light with a definite wide pattern light to illuminate where you're going in turns. All of this with some awesome distance lighting so as not to over-drive the lighting. This runs somewhat counter to conventional logic on excessive foreground light being bad.

As for the color of the lights, remember, they're (currently) running in clear weather.

Interesting that the corvettes have lights aimed at the fence barriers.

Warm color temps like selective yellow are less disruptive and distracting to human vision than bright white 6000k+ LEDs (another benefit to yellow), so that may be a valid comparison to the OEM LED fogs. That said, if you don't need them for a specific purpose, it is still better to have them off.

Looks like super cheap misleading Amazon garbage. Not SAE, or fogs, or even a remotely quality product. At $53 for a pair that product is going to be a straight up dumpster fire.

Comparing racing standards to normal DOT standards means nothing to us who are required to adhere to DOT. It's not like Le Mans has to deal with oncoming traffic and pedestrians etc.

Exactly. Racing is a whole other game. These teams will run whatever system they can balance between maximum light (because the most important part of seeing is having enough light) and minimal power draw, as well as any regulations they have to meet, like the vehicle class based distinction in color that some endurance races require.

I think maybe too stroked and I should have taken that to a conversation. I think what he was trying to do is help me with my "too much" foreground light question from the posted daniel stern interview about fog lights. Sorry it was no way meant to detract from the SAE topic.

bit late in response. But someone was saying a few pages back the SS3 sports don't freeze up. Well, I say that's not true. Mine froze up on the first winter storm I had last year. I'm in Southern MT if that matters.

This is why i bought SS3 C2 pro's for the other truck to make sure they stay ice free.

Really? I didn't see that and I figured that @Too Stroked or @crashnburn80 would have been on it like a fly on stink! Either way... Thanks Monte!

Oh, and I have my first pair of C1s on hand... :anonymous:

SS3 Sports are not recommended in environments where freezing is a concern. For cold weather Pro or Max is recommended to de-ice.

I fully agree that racing lighting is very different from road legal lighting. Racers don't have to worry about oncoming traffic. Interestingly, they do have to worry about cars coming up from behind blinding them though. But I digress.

The point I was trying to make had to do with "excessive foreground light" which is supposed to be bad for one's distance vision. The cars racing a LeMans had tons of foreground light in addition to the best distance lighting money can buy. That would appear to clearly violate the master's (Daniel Stern's) sage advice.

Um, would you believe I was taking a nap? No, wait. I was re-arranging my sock drawer. Yea, that was it - I think.

I wonder if it might have something to do with the relation of the intensities of the foreground vs distance.. When you are limited by the low maximum intensities under the various laws, dramatically increasing foreground light intensity would be detrimental if a similar or greater intensity increase isnt possible for the distance. His statements about this being a bad deal for road going vehicles is also couched in the fact that lights are meant to be designed to function within a limited performance range, to purposefully compromise one drivers ability to see clearly, so as not to limit another drivers vision. Given the sum of my knowledge about the lighting regs these races operate under (basically null), I would hazard a guess that aerodynamics and power draw are more of a concern than not blinding the preceeding car.
