I like the way they look... who cares about effectiveness.

Actually, that is not correct. A wing is airfoil designed to create lift by changing the speed at which air travels over the top vs the bottom of the airfoil. If you are in flight school, Bernoulli's Principle should ring a bell. The prop's purpose is to create thrust. It will push air directly backwards to create forward thrust using Newton's Third Law. A bug deflector causes air disruption, and therefore increases aerodynamic drag. It's purpose is to disrupt the airflow coming off the front of the vehicle just enough to (hopefully) direct bugs and small debris away from your windshield (think icing on the leading edge of a wing). It creates aerodynamic drag, not lift. Some are better at it than others. Those that do the best job have been wind tunnel tested. To say that a bug shield has the same basic shape as an airfoil ignores the different purpose and design of both. While I certainly don't have a ton of time, I do have over 100 hours PIC time in C172's and Piper PA-28-161's.

And "all the glass replacment(sp) folks are riding around shooting bb's at windshields"? Really??

What about it? I see more chips on the edge of my hood that I do anywhere else. When I had my Audi it was different. It had chips all over the front. With the trucks I see them on the edge of the hood.

My 06 Tacoma was the same. The only place I saw chips was the hood. A bug guard would have prevented that.

I tried those bug shields long ago and let me tell you, they just don't work. I still got bugs, rock chips on windshield and more damage from it, than the bugs.

But they do look good on some vehicles, so there's that.
