Yo! I'm getting a '21 pro, Sept 5th, and the dealership said they'd swap tires, discounting whatever they replace the OEMs with by the cost of the OEM tires. First, is that a good deal or should I throw the OEMs up for sale on the various markets? Second, I'm not planning on modifying the suspension, so what tire brand/style/size should I have them (or me) throw on there for an aggressive look that plays well with logging roads/ snow/ freeway? For quick reference, the OEMs are P265/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar. Decent DD tire, but I believe there's a good compromise between looks/functionality.

Seeing you’re in Oregon. This makes complete sense.

As far as selling or trading the tires I would use search.

For brand style and size I would use search.

And then for after you get those I'd highly recommend you look into using search.

That sounds like a good deal. I'm a fan of BFGs I've used them for over 35 years and they have served me well. KO2s on my truck and my wife's Jeep, Comp T/As on my daughter's car.
The KOs are a good all terrain, I have gotten good mileage out of them and they are quiet.

Sincerely appreciate your feedback. I think I miswrote. I'm essentially wondering if people have a) done this exact same thing with the dealership; b) put more aggressive/larger tires on their stock truck (and which ones) without regret.

    OP,

Sorry. I have no snarky comments. I just don't have the energy. :).

I have heard you can use the search engine but where is the fun in that? Two comments:

    1) I would take the dealer deal on doing the tire swap. I think that is the easiest thing to do and if they are doing retail pricing it might not end up that bad. Obviously, check local pricing to make sure that you are not getting taken advantage of. But if I were you, I would do it. I sold my OEM tires to a friend for a nice discount but if the dealer offered me this option, I would have done it with no reservation.

    2) I would look at the Nittos. I am on my second set of Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I think they are a great balance between off road, snow and daily driving. But that is just me, of course. There are a ton of great tires out there. I really like the Nittos, the Toyos and am very curious about the new off road Pirelli's. Then there are the crowd favorite KO2s and the more budget friendly Falkens. You really can't go wrong and it is a matter of personal preference. So my personal preference is for the Nittos ... but keep in mind that doesn't make me a tire expert and I have not driven for 10K miles on all of the other tires. :)

Congrats on the truck ... and good luck to you ... post back what you decide and how the numbers worked out. I am curious if it makes more sense (not to mention more convenient) to go through the dealer or to source tires from a good shop and then sell the OEM tires locally.

As a psychologist (and human), I've learned that people like to live in the shit and tend to perpetuate this by trying to bring others down with them; no doubt an attempt to feel better about themselves. Then, there are the people who feel better when they can be helpful or just simply like to be helpful because it's a preferred identity. I digress - thanks for being the latter.

I've heard fantastic things about nittos, so I'll dig deeper. I'll definitely keep you posted about what they offer me for the OEMs....I may use that search features to see what others are buying/selling for, but I do love me some human interaction at times!

Thanks. If you can choose to be anything you want, why not choose to be helpful. But maybe that is just me.

In any case, it might make sense to ask your dealer what tires they sell. I was surprised that the dealer I service my truck at also carries Nitto. You may also want to ask them if they will credit you for the tires and then charge you to mount tires if you source them elsewhere. Probably not but worth asking. I did have a friend you got a tire credit, drove his trick three miles to a tire dealer, put on the new tires he bought and then drove the tires back to the dealer. I didn't have that option as I am not that lucky. :)

In case it helps, these were my top five tires that I looked at:

    1) Nitto Ridge Grapplers. My eventual choice because they were the second set I've owned. Love them by the way.

    2) Toyo Open Country. New model. Wanted these but no dealer had them near me, unfortunately.

    3) Pirelli Off Road. Was really curious about these but supply was limited.

    4) The vaunted KO2s. Nice tires but more overkill than what I need. Good for hardcore off roading. But for me I am only off road 5% of the time so it seemed unnecessary.

    5) The Falken Wildpeaks. Nice budget tire. Price was close enough to the Nittos that I went with what I knew.

I couldn’t help it. I was in Oregon 2 years ago visiting. On the way back to the airport I stopped to put gas and couldn’t figure why everyone was sitting on their asses. Then the guys runs up and says I have to wait till he can do it cause you’re not allowed to pump gas. I responded back the hell up I’m from Texas. :duel::duel:. But for real many of the ones mentioned by the others you would like. Congrats on the new Tacoma.

Camrys are a better value than a Pro Tacoma. No need to replace the tires on the Camry, because it's a Camry. The Camry will do 90% of what a Tacoma can do.

Don’t take the stock tires home from the dealership. Think about the convenience of not having to sell them yourself and add in the fact that you’re unlikely to get anything close to retail for them, assuming the “retail” price the dealership is assigning to them is pretty close to reality.
