Ocean Shores

Headed to Ocean Shores, WA Sunday from Nor Cal to look for/at houses.

Any must see, do things I should be aware of. Any reasons to not bother with living there.

I'm temporarily retired and sick of the heat, smoke and PG&E burning my town, house and forests down.

Any ideas, advice, ridicule or sarcasm will be appreciated.....

Cool area close to the beach.

 

Not a ton of jobs up at Ocean Shores. Kinda far from everything.. I mean when aberdeen is your closest town ... nevermind...

 

While you're there, head east into the Olympics. Lake Quinault area is beautiful.
Ocean, rain forest, and retirement. Sounds fantastic. Enjoy

 

I heard tons of people are catching tuna up in Eureka

 

Stay in Cali. We're sick of Cali people moving here.

I was down in Ocean Shores and area a bunch until my early thirties. It has its ups and downs, but my favorite part is the tourist offseason and winter. It feels like you have the whole place to yourself. 4th of July used to be really good on the beach too. Take a look at it, but be aware that it has multiple personalities depending on month and weather.

I lived in Westport, WA for many years.
Westport is a commercial fishing town on the south side of the entrance to Grays Harbor; and Ocean Shores is a tourist town, a few miles north of the entrance to Grays Harbor, on the north side. They are known locally as 'South Beach' & 'North Beach'.
The entire area, from Ocean Shores, to Hoquiam & Aberdeen, and on around to Westport, is collectively known as 'Grays Harbor'.

Based upon my many years of experience living in that area, here's the hard cold facts that you need to be aware of:

The Grays Harbor area of Washington is the absolute ButtHole of the West Coast - you will not find a more undesirable place.

That area has the worst weather of any place that I have ever been in the Northwest; and considering where you are coming from, it seems as though you might be going from one extreme to the other.

There is ZERO intelligent life there, but plenty of the other kind.

Ocean Shores is close to nothing, and everything that you want or need to acquire will require a long drive. Aberdeen is a 30 minute drive on a bad road, and there is very little there. Olympia is another hour drive from Aberdeen, and that is where you will be forced to go for things. Olympia does have everything you would ever need or want, including intelligent life, but that is a 90 minute drive. Trust me, if you live in Ocean Shores, then you will be making regular trips to Olympia.

Ocean Shores is really just a Tourist Town, to which folks are drawn for only about a month out of the year, in the summertime (during that brief window of nice weather). There is a reason why the year-round population of Ocean Shores is so small (for the reasons already stated above); and most of the homes there are Summer/Vacation homes that are empty for most of the year.

If it is at all possible, I recommend a long-term visit before making any commitments to living there. Perhaps in a nice RV you could stay comfortably for a while, and see for yourself what you think of the area.

There are plenty of nice areas here in Washington, and I'm sure that you could find just what you are looking for; but Ocean Shores is probably not that place.
