I think we both are over simplifying the situation. Yours assumes you are close but not too close. Mine assumes that you are either a direct target or "hidden"
It all comes down to person skill sets. With Jan being new to carrying and using weapons- I wouldn't want her to try to dodge a guy with a gun while trying to draw, cover, and fire. Me- I might think about depending on the looks of the guy and the situation...but there is no one answer.

Tell that to the cop I once had as a patient who shot his own nuts off drawing his weapon.

It does vary from person to person. I would probably feel more comfortable with the gun closest to me so it would allow me to hit it while I drew mine.

Please... NEVER have anyone around you while you practice that drill. Draw, rack on your pocket (rear sight only, of course), aim, and fire.. assuming you actually did manage to chamber a round. I'd have paramedics standing by.
What can be done, and what should be practiced to limit your chance of failure, are two different things.

that can be practiced with dummy rounds and is a well known tactic for situations where you may find yourself on armed. Safe? ehh, but but safety is relevant when you are already about to kill someone.

You would be amazed at the number of of discharges (supposedly well trained) cops have holstering charged weapons.

The extra time it takes to charge my weapon is almost unmeasurable. The extra element of safety and control is worth it to me.

    YMMV

Many, many LE departments are teaching their personnel one-handed charging skills. Kimber even made some 1911s for the LAPD that had rear sights specificly designed for this very purpose. If you ever get a hand wounded in a firefight you better know how to charge your weapon with one hand or you will likely be one of the casualties.

And if you don't know what to do with your trigger finger to maintain proper control you shouldn't be playing with guns anyway.

Having said that, practicing any new tactic with dummy rounds (or a dummy pistol) is always a smart thing to do until your gross motor skills catch up.

You are talking about two VERY different tactics. Wounded hand in a firefight versus fighting hand to hand while trying to charge a weapon are wildly different.
Behind cover and/or concealment with time to pay attention to racking the weapon and keeping your head down.
Trying to fend off another person w/ CQC skills while racking your pistol-That is begging to get shot with the gun you drop or have it jam/catch clothing.

1 in 5 police officers who are shot in the line of duty are hit with bullets from their own or a partners weapon-That is good enuf reason for me to make sure I can shot as fast as I can draw. I practice shooting from just out of my holster all the way up to the Modified Weaver stance. I also practice Point Shooting. None of that matters if I have to rack a round into the first.

Depends on the pants I'm wearing. Sometimes I have a 5 shot .38 special tucked inside my pants, all 5 rounds in the cylinder. Or I have a S&W 4506 (1911 mock) full clip, chambered, thumb safety on. It fits my hand perfectly that I can switch off the safety in the draw.

It's really up to you. If you're confident in your ability to not shoot your foot off, and you're comfortable with carrying it, then keep it hot.

Definitely. But this guy was drawing his weapon, off duty from an in-the-belt holster.

    Oops.

If the weapon has to be charged before firing the officers have the opportunity to disable the untrained perp that grabs their weapon. If the weapon doesn't need anything done to it before firing you have a dead cop.

The scenario you are describing is why more and more departments are requiring weapons to have an external safety. Not a problem for the trained officer but the untrained perp has trouble figuring out why the weapon won't fire when they try to pull the trigger.

I'll keep my chamber clear, thanks.

If I am trying to close on a perp in a situation that might delve into hand to hand combat my weapon is already charged. If I am surprised and get into hand to hand combat with an uncharged weapon in my hand I will apply the weapon with a great deal of force to the side of the perps head. Then I will charge the weapon and empty the magazine into him.

I'll keep my chamber clear. Training, practice. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat......
