@ec51 in a nutshell: Toyota builds what they want and they send what they want to each dealer. If "your" dealer isn't allocated the specific type of vehicle you want (cab, drive train, bed length in the case of trucks), that dealer won't be able to get you your desired truck. They may be able to swap one of their allocated vehicles to another dealer in exchange for that second dealer's allocation of the particular build you'd like.

You are not ordering a truck to built specifically for you/to your requirements.

I also put a deposit down with Karl Malone, and didn’t hear anything for 12 weeks. I called up Brent Brown in Orem, and they had an allocation of just what I wanted. The guy at Brent Brown told me that Malone will just take deposits on stuff they will never get, but Brent Brown won’t take a deposit unless they are certain it’s something they can get.
If I were you, I would get your deposit back from Karl Malone and go a different direction. You could be waiting a super long time if you keep trying with Malone.

Like gsubioguy said your not ordering anything. The area your in has Toyota regional who dealers request vehicles through. They have the list of what Toyota is building and what is available in your area. The dealers all get the listing of what’s in the pipeline and can search for what you are looking for. A lot is determined on dealer volume so some can snag more than others. Usually it’s a fiasco because they only do allocations twice a month and each time inventory changes. If a certain delaer is telling you flat out you can’t order one then I would attempt to do business with them. Reason being is they aren’t BSing you to begin with. Next up is see what they can or have allocate/d that’s not sold and start from there. Plenty of dealers will tell you they can order one and take a deposit and then you’ll be sitting and waiting for months with nothing but less money in your pocket and you thinking your getting a truck. Chances are it’s going to be a long process but it doesn’t hurt to reach out and see what’s available. Best bet is the inventory director because they have first hand knowledge of everything coming in and you might have better results.

that’s kind of the feeling I’m getting because it’s been 8 weeks so far. I understand having to wait with covid and chip shortages. The salesman said it would be delivered any day now and that was over two weeks ago. I’m thinking it hasn’t even been built yet and they don’t have the allocation. Shouldn’t they be able to see what inventory they are getting and when?

I would ask him to provide you a screen shot of daily dealer showing you the truck and it should be marked in their system as sold and have your name by it. If they can’t show you anything then there’s a good chance they don’t have it. Once it’s allocated they can track it’s build. Now if they do have it and can show it to you then it may just be delayed or possibly could have been on that train that derailed but I’m not sure on your location. I think it was Utah or somewhere but a lot of trucks went down in that and dealers are trying to make up for that.

I placed my deposit April 23 and they got it allocated the last week in June and it arrived yesterday so I know the feeling.

great stuff here thank you. I have a deposit on a Limited Nightshade and was told it would definitely be a 2022. They have one unclaimed OR allocated to them due in September. Can we expect allocations to continue for November and December?

Dealer explained that certain regions also get certain trims/configs more often than others based on sales.

honestly, with LR possibly coming to other trims I’m intrigued to wait for that possibility alone.

I went to my dealer on July 27. He found the truck like I wanted on Toyota's computer schedule that was already allocated to that dealer. It was scheduled to go to production on August 15 with a mid September delivery estimate. He wanted a non-refundable deposit of $1,000.

I received a 4 page, detailed printout of the truck's specs, a sales contract signed by the manager and me, with the actual VIN number on the contract and spec sheet.

On August 20, after hearing about the chip shortage and reduced production stories, I asked the dealer to check on the status per my VIN number and was informed that my order is still on schedule.

Perhaps having a VIN number is the difference between a having a vehicle or a false promise. Note that I don't actually have a vehicle yet either (fingers crossed).

Well I would hope they would be Nov/Dec but there’s really no telling with how they are going to navigate this. They may get base model trims out sooner because the quantity of chips aren’t as much as higher trims and they could possibly produce more and then delay the higher trims for possibly Jan/Feb but this is all speculation. It’s too hard to tell. I would check Toyota’s website and see if you can still build a limited nightshade in your area. If you can, then there is a good chance that certain dealers can still get access to those.

The LR is definitely worth it in my opinion and I like how Toyota did the Trail Edition with the Bronze wheels and Lettering on the Grille.

I wouldn’t believe anything they tell you until you have a VIN. I would call up who ever you’re working with at Karl Malone and force some answers out of them. That’s basically what I had to do before I withdrew my deposit from them.

Well yesterday was headed up to a concert in Ogden, left a little early to check out some more trucks on the way up. Ended up signing the papers, pick it up Tuesday. May just leave my deposit in that I have for the “2022” and just wait and see what happens. Worst case scenario I can trade into it.

Going to get my deposit back tomorrow. The truck was originally for my wife but she’s tired of waiting and the runaround. Looks like we will have a Subaru instead.

If I can chip in a bit about the Utah Toyota dealer situation... I think it has less to do with the dealership, and more to deal with the specific salesperson.

I had a bad experience with a salesperson at Young Toyota in Logan. Just some typical car sales selective honesty BS about price mark ups etc. I spoke with a really forthright guy at Mark Miller I liked, but I ultimately ended up going with Tony Divino Toyota in Ogden, and got a great salesperson named Jason who has been very communicative and honest with me.

My neighbor, who is also here on TacomaWorld somewhere, had a bad experience at Performance Toyota in Bountiful, and ultimately went with Karl Malone and had a great experience and now drives a beautiful Taco I have to look at every day while I'm waiting for my truck hahaha.

Again, I think the moral is that entire dealerships aren't necessarily bad, I just think that your experience is going to vary considerably based on what salesperson you get. I definitely think getting recommends from people on these forums for a good salesperson will help your chances of getting a dealer that will be honest and give you updates on each allocation date. I HIGHLY recommend asking your salesperson for there phone number so you can text them directly for updates!

At the same time though, getting your allocation is still kind of a crap shoot no matter what dealership you use or what salesperson you work with, but... having a communicative salesperson you can text and get answers from definitely does make things a little easier.

So I did as some of you suggested. Asked the dealer if the truck had even been allocated to the dealer and built. Now they tell me it’s just now showing it has been. So apparently the previous times they said it was shipped for delivery was a lie. No concrete dates or details. Just that they are getting a huge shipment this week and they feel it’s the one.

I asked for my deposit back. So if anyone in the Salt Lake area is looking for an Army green trd off-road, there might be one available. I doubt it though.

May I ask which dealer you went? I have put an pre order at Langley's, the sales guy told me waiting time is not always long on Tacoma, generally 2-3 months except luner rock.

I put down a deposit for a special order in June. Estimated delivery was September. Just got word that the completion date is now in November, and it'll be a 2022 model.

Is the VIN on the spec sheet a temp, or the actual VIN?

Looks like the Advanced Technology Package may now be included in the OR, based on the zero price. The previous spec sheets I got had it listed for $1,700.
