The Rally has been great. No mechanical issues or anything like that. Just keep in mind that the stock suspension is SOFT and I'm planning on new tires for better dirt riding. I did not like these factory tires for the dirt.

On the subject of ABS on bikes, it is not a power assist system, it’s actually a power reduction system that regulates and over rides your hand or foot pressure on the the lever or pedal to prevent lockup. If I’m not mistaken all ABS systems are designed to fail “open” to prevent a system induced lockup. If a bike break locks up it’s normally from trash from corrosion caused by water in fluid binding the piston(s). This requires input from the operator. 99 percent of front break crashes are from the operator doing a front break panic grab. Glad your friend is ok. Have your fluid flushed every 2 years

    Stock levers.

No ABS that I know of.

I was thinking to myself, what if he unconsciously grabbed a handful of brake for some reason? Seems so strange. I’ll have to hear details from him directly.

Maybe a bolt wiggled out from somewhere and lodged in the disc? I feel like that happened to motonosity at some point in one of his videos over the last year.

    Edit: found it.

Thanks for the update. I'm torn between a $5000ish 250 or going all out and getting a $11000ish KTM 350 exc-f. They have a lot more power and are almost 100lbs lighter but I don't think I really need all that to go have fun.

No problem. Power wasn't a consideration for me since it had been so long since I had ridden(well over 20 yrs).

Don't forget, the KTM is basically a competition bike that they did the bare minimum to make street legal. It's what I both love and hate about them. Light and nimble like a dirt bike. Frequent maintenance of a dirt bike. If you enjoy changing oil every 8 hours or so, cleaning air filters, and frequent valve adjustments, it maybe the right bike for you.

They're gorgeous bikes though. Exactly what I'd want in a street legal offroad bike. And probably the reason I thought my WR250R was such a turd.

I went to Sturgis this year.

    Accidentally.

Family vacation coincidentally timed during the bike rally. It really wasn’t bad, but some of the the best riding roads were heavily congested at times with riders.

Beautiful place to ride outside bike week.

Thanks for bringing up the maintenance factor. Something I tend to forget with just getting back into the moto world. The Rally has an interval of 8k miles, not that I'll ever get that far before changing but it's nice.

I don’t ride enough to make the OCI either. Just change my oil annually.

If I had more time at work and wasn't in the busy season, I'd go back and find your "I'm not trading this one in in a year, I'm going to keep it for a while" post

I started going back to check his posts and it looks like he hit a year with the Duc in August. Guess he kinda wasn’t lying. Haha.
