I have a new 2021 Tacoma Pro with the 6-speed manual. Intermittently, when I shift from neutral to first, you hear a soft "clunk" and at times, it will roll forward a small amount.

I've now shifted it tens (ok, probably hundreds) of times and just when I think it's resolved itself, it happens again.

    Anyone else experienced this?

I'm heading to the dealership this Friday to have 'em check it. Kinda bummed and REALLY hoping I'm being over sensitive and my less than 2k new truck doesn't have an issue.

    Interested in your input...

Drivetrain slop? Is it more noticeable when cold or hot? Maybe check the u joints for play or lack of grease.

Could be, but less than 2k miles...I'd be SUPER pissed if that is the case.

Not sure, but removing the accumulator helps a lot of issues.

Mine has always has a faint clunkity sound when shifting 1-2 and 2-1. It might happen in other gears but I just can't hear it over the other noises. I think it is normal and benign.

At a stop, or you're downshifting to first while still moving? It's moving forward a small amount is what's perplexing to me. Like it's pushing you forward despite being on the brakes?

Hmm. None of those issues over here. My gearbox been very smooth since the truck was new, now it’s at 27k miles.

I did grease the u joints at about 10k miles, not sure if that made any difference.

Good luck with your issues man, let us know the outcome.

I'm confused. Are you saying that, with the clutch fully in, on flat ground, foot off the brake, shifting into first will pull the truck forward a bit?

Almost like when the clutch is not disengaging fully?

Yes...flat, foot off brake like at a light. It rolls forward, but a very small bit, then it stops.

Never had the clunk 1-2, 2-1, unless I screw up on the shift. With the accumulator or without. I did have a slight clunk going to 4 or 5 sometimes with that stupid thing. Now without it no more clunk.

Sounds like clutch is not fully disengaging.

It's not a crunch like gears grinding due to a bad shift and it isn't perfectly timed with the movement of the shift lever. It sounds like some slop in the drivetrain. shifting mechanism, or clutch. It's super faint and hard to describe. None of my other manuals have ever made the same sound.

Do you still have the accumulator?

I think with more drive time your transmission will smooth out. I have a 5 speed and it was a little tight at first.

I'm not sure if my 5 speed has one of those accumulators. I don't notice anything strange about my clutch feel.

    Welcome aboard!

The 2.7l 5MTs do not have an accumulator. Weirdly though, some folks have asked if there was one from shift behavior.

Yep, no accumulator for the “real” SR5 tacos:)
