Just by looking at your pic, looks like someone did cut it in half. It’s also a safety issue. Only 2 bolts holding the second part. Not safe in my opinion.

Ya. If you hit the front part of that it's going to flex up instead of actually be a skid plate.

I'd bet dollars to donuts, the guy you bought it from had a drop bracket lift. He had to cut the skid at the cross member, but held on to the back of the skid plate, in case he ever sold it... Are the rear holes of the rear skid piece slotted? He probably did that, to allow it to tuck under the front skid lip.

Regardless, that's a factory (maybe a knockoff) skid that has been cut in half.

Edit: Did you see the dudes truck? Did it seem like it had a very tall lift?

So I got it welded for $100. So total out of pocket was still cheaper than buying it new, so no harm done. What do you guys use to paint them (if you did)? Just rattle can paint, bed liner...?

I tried rattle canning mine and it got insanely chipped up within weeks. I've since bedlined it and it's held up nicely. The only issue with bedliner, is that when it gets scraped off, it comes off in chunks... but it's under the truck, so who gives a f**k.

Isn't it already powered coated? Why would you paint over that? Also it's going to get all gouged up if you use it for its intended purpose.

I'm pretty sure mine is powder coated. I might go down to the garage and look at it again. The product description also says powdered coated.

    https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota__Tacoma/TRD-Front-Skid-Plate/75489794/PTR6035190.html

However it just occurred to me that the OP needs to re-coat over the welds. I would have probably sent it back. I'm thinking it's not going to be a strong as new, but I have very little welding experience.

The factory TRD Pro skid plate comes from the factory with a silver-ish powder coat. However, the OP burned his off when he had it welded back together. Someone had previously cut it in half to accommodate a drop bracket lift. Yes, the OP could leave it bare and exposed, because it's aluminum and rust isn't a concern. However, if the OP wants to make the underside of his truck all pretty, who are we to fault him? He wasn't asking IF he should paint/coat it. He was asking for recommendations on what to paint/coat it with.
