So as a serious reply, they sell kevlar panels that you can place inside your door frame, but the really issue is window armor. People tend to shoot at what they see, so the pricey bit is getting ballistic acrylic. A 48" x 72" lvl IIIA can go for $3000+.

My company I work for sells ballistic steal storm shelters, and we use ballistic plexiglass and steel.
I have actually considered getting some of the eff up pieces and placing them in the doors. Our paneling is lvl III rated. Although my door pins might not like having a 80lb plate added to the door.

You might consider a homemade solution as a cheap alternative.

And yeah its up to you what you want to do. I of course am working on a Toyota Technical for grins. So I dont shy from making my shitbox look like it drove out of an active combat zone.

 

Oh, I'm not disagreeing. I think that a lot of what people do to their trucks is silly. I like the engineering problem of "better than nothing" though. That's why I bit on this one. Even common bulletproof body protection only has a trauma plate on the chest and back. I was laboring under the assumption that this was another "can this be done and how" threads, not so much a "can I do a professional job at home."

Armoring a Taco = silly , but if the goal is to just put some protection, I think that the DIYer could definitely improve upon nothing. Just don't expect it to stop close range rifle rounds. AND if the area is as bad as people say it is, I think I'd be wearing some low-pro plates on the daily in addition to a side piece. Sometimes you don't get to pick where work sends you.

However, I don't think it's impossible. Just like everything else in this hobby, the DIY version will likely suck compared to actually work done by a specialist. Info from TAC's website does say that laminated PE fabric is one of their options.

The chances of being caught up in something like that is astronomical. Doesn't require the need for any bulletproof vehicle. Play the PowerBall. Your chances at winning that are likelier than the need for a bulletproof truck.

 

Proper reaction. IDGAF if the light is red. If my options are "firefight directly behind my vehicle" or "run a red light w/o getting in an accident" that's a pretty easy one.

Depends on where you live and what extra curricular activities you're involved in.

 

I agree with everyone saying GTFO of that area my man. With the money you will spend buying the steel fitting it to your truck etc., you would probably have enough money for a down payment at a new and safer area to live.

Akkording is right. That's where I live. Not to mention there is a titty-bar near there that I occasionally enjoy that had a trunk full (2 to be exact) of headless bodies. Also I am not concerned about the heat, I was born and raised in Texas and that's why god invented AC. I just meant that with the thick bulletproof windows you can't roll them down. That's it. Even with the AC the trucks get hot when you have bulletproof windows.Thanks for all the helpful info.

I can't disagree with the GTFO options everybody else pitched, but that wasn't what you asked.

 

I see it as going full Bruce Willis, and taping a phone book to you back and chest. It could work, but in places I expected to take enemy fire, I would wear a plate carrier.

When I got salty and older, I stopped wearing side sapi’s because I felt it was more more important to be mobil and enduring then have a 4-6 inch protection in a statically unlikely place to be hit, fully prepared to eat crow if I became a static.

Exactly. The diminishing returns are strong here, especially since wearing a carrier is out of the question.

If the goal is mitigation of stray rounds into your passengers, the argument could be made that a child in a child seat is often mostly covered from the side panel of the door. Still doesn't solve the glass in this case.

Somebody earlier cited the possibility for an increased likelihood of fun engagements related to certain types of extracurricular activities.

 

A piece of 3/16 or 1/4 plate attached to inside of tailgate would reduce odds a lot (maybe 50%). Would stop some of the handgun stuff coming from the rear and could be useful for other things and easily detached for trips. Best thing is to just drive courteous and profile well.

And I thought we only had that problem in SO.CA. Your best bet is in Tijuana Mexico. There are lots of businesses that specialize in modifing viehicles with armor and they are booked up and busy. But take care when you go down there, with the highest murder rate in the western hemispere and in the top three in the world, it is best to keep a low profile when you go.

Its going to be prohibitive weight wise to use AR steel plate.

And youre not going to be able to do the windows by yourself. The thickness alone will require extensive reinforcement to install.
