This is the noisiest manual I have ever had. I do notice mostly a clang noise when I drive around town with the windows down. That said I have put over 25,000 miles on it and it hasn't changed in the least so I'm considering it as normal.

The transmission has shifted smoother as I have put more miles on it. I changed the oil to Motorcraft XT-M5-QS full synthetic fluid (meets Toyota specifications) and noticed a smoothness improvement over the factory fill. Rock Auto had the best price.

I believe the noise is more noticeable than the older trucks due to the thinner aluminum transmission case and the modern synthetic oil. Your age determines what you consider older -- the older trucks had cast iron (or thicker aluminum) case transmissions and heavier gear oil. That said if your previous manuals were in front wheel drive cars no truck will ever be that quiet.

Clang is a good description of what I hear. It makes sense that it might be coming from inside the transmission because it has a sort of reverb to it that makes it sound like it comes from an enclosed space. And ya I only really hear it with the window open at slow speed.

My previous manual was a awd 2001 subaru which I had until 2016, but I’ve owned 3 other pickups with manuals with the oldest being a 1974 Datsun.

Shame all the old Datsuns (and Toyota too) mini trucks rusted away. They were so good at being "the basic handy truck" just like the old Rangers.

I had two Datsun’s and a Ranger. The first Datsun had a bungee cord preventing the right front fender from blowing in the wind and the bed had holes big enough to lose medium sized dogs. It lasted one month before the rear diff went out. Not a terrible setback since I only paid $100.

I just bought a 2022 TRD off road with a manual and it’s the exact same thing as you described. What happened when you brought yours in?
