I have a Hobart 140 110v mig welder and am doing a chevy 63 swap which has me welding 1/4in material onto my frame. It's "rated" for 1/4" but only multi-pass (I'm skeptical of those weld charts). I only have access to 110v outlets where I live so I'm wondering if it's a good idea. Or maybe I can use a converter and get a better unit? Or maybe preheating the metal will be enough

It’s possible. Multiple passes with .024 wire is the best bet. Definitely want to get some good practice in and make sure it’s penetrating into the corners along with all the usual metal preparation techniques.

    Same machine.

.030 with max voltage and wire feed around 55. All 3/16 / 1/8 tube thickness in the first pic and 1/4 overlay and 3/16 spring hanger on the frame in the second.

110 is all you can do with the 140

I think it boils down to your skill level and what you feel comfortable with. If you run it hot and focus on the root you should be good.

@Dalandser has the proof right there, it’s possible.

A deciding factor may also be what it is you are welding on to your frame.

In my testing for my bumper build I found that running hot wasn’t enough to get deep in the corner reliably. That’s why I went to the smaller wire and multiple passes. Nice solid weld every time, just takes a little longer.

What do mean when you say “corner”?

The root of the weld. You can see how it’s still square - didn’t get hot enough

I’m more concerned about OP wanting to put 63’s on a 2019.

All I have is a Hobart 140 and run it on flux core (hotter weld), bevel the joint if you can, pre heat it and multipass it and you should be fine!

I did my whole sas with one and welded the knuckle balls onto my axle with a 140 and they haven't broken off yet...

Yeah if it's a sandbox vehicle for your budget you can afford to experiment and see what you like. Lots of guys don't like how they handle but no way like trial and error to figure out what you prefer.

Sounds like one of those things no one agrees on and I won't know until I try. But I'll give some thought before I start cutting, thanks

What's the benefit of running .024 vs .03?

Better for smaller beads on a thin edge
