I've been thinking about testing my welding skills by building myself a rear bumper. I made some designs awhile ago that were less than impressive. I redid my design. Tell me what you all would change. The appendage thingy off the right side is a wrap around I may or may not include. The holes are for 4" lights and the box is the license plate slot.

    Better view of wrap around.

I used Google SketchUp 8. It's actually a pretty decent program once you get the tools right. Plus it's free

Might be better if you didn't allow for the 6" length of the license plate and made it only around 4-5" Stock bumper is roughly the same, and most after market bumpers have added rear clearance.

If the license plate is 12"x6" how would it being 4-5" work? The measurement I got from my stock bumper showed it being nearly 8" in the center where the plate is.

Just forget what I said... Looks good.

Also, relocation of plate, or hitch style adapter for the plate, is how it would fit.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
:popcorn:I want to see it on the truck. One thing I would do is put some sort of guard behind the lights to block rocks form hitting your lights when your flying down the trail.

Oh it will Definitely have protection for the lights. I am going to make access doors held on with wing nuts or something to go behind the lights to keep rocks and shit from screwing them up. I plan on making it out of 3/16" and the reinforcements will be 3/8".

I decided to leave the wrap around off because ultimately it was just extra metal, fabrication, and potential headaches. And if I decide that I want them the design is super simple and they can be added.

I really like that design. Good work!! Have you thought about adding any D-ring shackles?

Now all you have to do is figure out how your are going to mount it! I can get pics from my truck that has a steel rear bumper if needed...

Well build it! Haha I'll let you be the guinea pig of my design :p

That'd be great! I've been trying to figure out how to securely mount it. Don't want it coming off going down the interstate or something!
