I am really trying to like my new Tacoma....

Ironically, my work buddies wife called him today because their F100, that she drives as a daily, died on the highway on-ramp, causing a huge traffic jam. Cool truck, but a bigger POS than any Tacoma. Sometimes we take modern reliability for granted.

Absolutely true. Every time I get hot for a classic car or truck, I have to remind myself they are not good vehicles by today's standards. My dad has a 76 vette. It is a turd and a rattle trap. By my experience, my Tacoma is a better sports car by every metric. My 90 Mustang and 68 Firebird were not well made either. Different times, different standards, but it is incredible how far cars have come.

1)Try driving in S5 with maybe even ECT On use S4 on hills if needed you might like it more than going the tune route.

2)If not find someone nearby to put in OV tune... I agree it is annoying to have to do it.

3)If your still unhappy dump it while resale is high. G/L

I did eventually get tuned like many other members on here because I wasn't satisfied like yourself...

I drove it around yesterday in S4 and 5 and it seemingly drove better. As suggested by another member, I'm looking at the shiftsense Pro V2 now. And it has definitely peaked my interest.

 

I had a shiftsense before going to OVTune. The shiftsense was ok - but not close to the OVTune improvement. Spend the extra $ and get the KDMax = you will be happy you did. BTW - the Shiftsense is a piggy back item so when it shits the bed (not likely but possible) you are back to square one. Not so with the Tune.

It's becoming pretty obvious that no one understands that distinction. People hear complaints about gear hunting or throttle response and suddenly they are scared to drive their truck on a 3 mile trip to the grocery store. Threads get posted with people asking about reliability because "they heard complaints about..."

After reading TW I'm always shocked that our roadways aren't littered with the remains of broken down 3rd gens and the carcasses of their owners.

I was in your situation a few years ago with a Dodge Half-ton I used to own. On paper it was exactly the truck I needed/wanted. In reality it broke-down every month immediately following (or while on) road trips. Was difficult to work on (it was put together in a weird way) and really wasn't all that comfortable and didn't have the power I thought it should have (I used it primarily as a tow rig for my toys). After nine months of modding and making repairs I got fed-up and traded it on a Silverado which has filled every need I've had for a tow rig and then some for the past 17 years.

My point is even though for a lot of people a Tacoma is the truck which fits them perfectly, that's not the case for everyone. Values are good right now, find something else and trade it would be my advice.

 

Such drama, gen 2.5 still has teething pain, it’s probably the best mid sized out there.

I guess it all depends on your perspective. I've owned a couple of different classic cars, including three air-cooled VW's. One of the VW's has taken two trips home on the back of a tow truck in the past twenty years; the first time was because I was a naive classic car owner and didn't have any tools with me (in that case I could have fixed it and driven it home if I'd had a screwdriver and a quart of oil). The second time an aftermarket part I'd recently installed failed. S-Happens but if you prepare for it and more importantly pay attention to the vehicle you can generally spot trouble before it happens. Having 100 mile towing with the Auto Club doesn't hurt either LOL!

For me, I'm obviously a fan of classic cars but admit that they have their limitations, which is why I bought my Taco.

I don’t think the press helps any. I read in consumer reports (admittedly not the best source) that the Tacoma had taken a beating on reliability ratings because of its problematic automatic transmission.

 

so how do you tune a 2.7L? everyone says I need to tune but I see no tunes for the 2tr-fe. seems like tuning the 2.7L would be more critical as it is underpowered.

 

Have them check your drive shaft. My 2017 had to have the drive shaft replaced because get this...the slip splines weren't greased from the factory. Cause lots of issues due to the slip splines binding, especially on deceleration/braking.

Definitely broken, but mine is too. I was next to one of those new Teslas yesterday and it just drove off without any noise. Can't believe my truck makes noise. And that warm air making people sick? The truck is just a giant hazard at this point. I'm going to demand a refund. Or a TRD Pro.
