White has always been the "standard" color.
If in doubt, paint it white.
Guaranteed not to clash with anything.

    - White interior flat latex paint is also the "base tint" (cheapest)

    - Primer is a variation altered slightly for the purpose, but...white.
I knew painting contractors who didn't bother using anything but white flat latex for priming.
They only had to buy one kind of paint for new construction.

    - Fleet vehicles...mostly white.

I see it from a slightly different angle.

In the 70s, it was all about anything but white for home interiors.
And a lot of that looked pretty dreadful.

    Then came the 80s.
Pastels to some extent, but also white, which made a big comeback.

This was when home construction went to panelized construction.
Subdivisions, standardization, and anything to speed things up.
I built some houses then, and subbed the trim on many hundreds of new houses.
Tract homes were done in all white...period.
    Decor magazines catered to this.

I dunno, it seems to me people focused on other things.
The color of the walls seemed to be a low priority.
    Also, people moved more often.
If painting with an eye to selling your house...paint it white. :notsure:

I confess that I'm glad to see people showing a bit more imagination in regard to interior paint.
Personally, I did the bath in the condo in a very pale slate blue/gray before the sale. (The buyers loved it).
    The other rooms...yeah, white.
It makes a space feel bigger.
