I agree that space exploration is imperative to advance technology. Let’s be real, space wars is a very possible thing if humans and multiple governments cannot achieve common goals despite differences. We have seen this already on Earth for years and this isn’t about war. Part of me wants to believe we would be notified of our imminent doom from our leaders (in the event of likely extinction), but the realism of mass hysteria caused by this info would be astronomical. I’d like to discuss more but fear the mentioning of politics and governments related to space programs so I will just leave it at that.

I can see your point, and perhaps the masses would not make it, but at least humanity would go on if we were advanced enough in space exploration. Wouldn’t that be something, a bunch of politicians starting the human race over on a new planet.

AS IF I didn’t have trouble sleeping already!
Only the most fortunate will get that opportunity. I find it similar to the ark availability portrayed in the movie 2012.

That term was coined by the C.I.A. To discredit anyone speaking out to be labeled as unstable or a lunatic.

Possibly, or at least knew from a previous planet the importance of tides. Without the moon the oceans would be a salty, stagnant pond.

It gets better. Its actually extremely rare to have the relative combination of elements that we have, in the location that we have. Our sun is an odd duck for example, producing (and distributing to its protoplanets) higher than normal amounts of phosphorus.

More importantly is appreciable amounts of water. Across the universe most water sits well beyond the temperate zone of the solar system, permanently locked up in rock formations or ice. The vast majority of planets within the temperate zone never accumulate an appreciable amount of water, because to contain non solid phase water, you need an atmosphere, and the required sequence of events of dust collection -> planet creation -> atmosphere generation -> liquid phase water, does not happen naturally.

The latest hypothesis I heard was that our solar system was originally set to become a binary star system, but fortunately Jupiter never really got its reactor up and running. But during that critical phase when our future sun finally started to win the game of gravitational tug-of-war with would-be sun Jupiter, there was another newly formed planet that really kick-started this whole concept of life-supportability. It was supposed to belong to Jupiter originally, before Jupiter lost the size race and became just another planet in orbit. And, being just outside the temperate zone this planet managed to collect a lion's share of free water during its formation.

Unfortunately for this planet and fortunately for us, that fight between Jupiter and sun had consequences. The process of putting Jupiter in its stable orbit tended to destabilize a number of Jupiter's satellites, our mystery planet included. This ice-heavy behemoth was now on a rapidly deteriorating death spiral towards sun, probably along with a few other bodies (hence, the asteroid belt). That is where it collided with proto-Earth, right smack dab in the middle of the temperate zone, delivering a whole host of elements and molecules that would normally be impossible to find in this zone.

As an earlier poster said, the result of that collision also birthed the moon. So now we have water, a planet that is in just the right temperature zone to keep water in a phase equilibrium, a moon plus just the right axial tilt to keep that water moving, and an abundance of elements from our weird sun that are essential to protein building. A one in several billion lottery.

#3 My strange and scary adventure in the Northern California wilderness. As I said in the prior 2 experiences I poster here I’d publish 3. I have other strange experiences in the woods but none as dramatic, scary or strange as these 3. To reiterate I’m 70+ years old and am an avid outdoorsman over the last 60 years. An avid hunter, fisherman, backpacker, hiker, and on and on. I’ve spent thousands of hours in the wilderness and had some most unusual experiences. This experience involves my dog Bear prior to my current dog. The lab in my avatar is my current dog Sprig. I’ve had hunting Labrador retrievers for over 40 years. They have all been highly trained hunting dogs, great family dogs, loving companions and my best friends. My lab prior to Sprig was Bear a big 95lb guy who was fearless. A very friendly dog but was afraid of nothing. Bear went everywhere with me, hunting, fishing, camping, boating…..

2 weeks before deer season Bear and I went camping for a couple days where I’ve deer hunted for 20 years. Just wanted to trout fish and scout the area prior to deer season. I know the area well but I still like to scout it before the season. We went to Sterling lake which is 20 miles west of Truckee on highway 80 in California. It’s a 30 to 40 minute drive from the highway down old logging roads. I went into the back side of the lake which is another 20 minutes of a 4wd trail/road. Set up camp by the lake. The back side is beautiful and remote. Then Bear and I took off hiking to some small lakes and ponds in the area to fish.

This next part isn’t really pertinent to the story but is interesting. It was getting late in the afternoon as I fished the last lake of the day and I wanted to get back to camp before dark. I’d have to hurry. On the trail back I noticed Bear nose to the ground tracking a hot scent. Couldn’t figure out what he was after. The trail was wet from an earlier quick passing thunder storm. I looked down at the trail and I could see tracks over the top of our tracks. The tracks followed us into the lake we were last at and looked like they were now heading back the way they came. Closer look I determined they we mountain lion tracks. It had obviously been trailing/stalking us and was now heading back the way it had come. I immediately put Bear on a leash. Didn’t need him messing with a cougar who could kill a dog within seconds. When in the wilderness I always carry either a 357 mag or a 44 mag, this time I had my 44 mag (Taurus Tracker, in stainless). Ordinarily the only time a lion is dangerous is if they have Cubs or a kill near by. Anyway we double timed back to camp without incident, got there about 20 minutes before dark. Immediately started my camp fire and lit my lantern. Had a large glass of bourbon to chill out with.

I was going to sleep outside under the stars but the experience with the cougar made me decide to sleep in my vehicle. At that time I had a 4Runner that was modded up for off road. (Loved that vehicle, got me into and out of some unbelievable places). Bear and I step up sleeping bag in the back and crashed. Now the scary part starts. About 4am in the morning I was startled awake to the sound of Bear growling. He was staring out the driver side rear window growling and shaking with fear. Bear was about ,5 years old then and I had never heard him growl before (bark yes but not growl) and he was shaking with fear. Never ever had he done that. I shined a flashlight out the side rear window but saw nothing. I then got out with a powerful spot light. About 60 yards out there was a hill about 100’ high thickly forested with trees and brush. I shined the light all over there for 5 minutes or so and saw nothing. I need to say that at the time I had the distinct feeling of being watched, from that hill. I’ve experienced that feeling before in the woods but never as strong as then. Didn’t see or hear anything so i back back in the 4Runner and tried to sleep until daylight. Took me awhile to get Bear calmed down.

At daylight I got up made a cup of coffee and decided to check out the hill. Still had the strong feeling of being watched. Got Bear out of the 4Runner and he started shaking again. I put a leash on him , checked my 44 and started toward the hill. Bear would not go. He pulled back on the leash, obviously scared. I wouldn’t force him so I let he get back in the 4 runner. I grabbed a 12 gauge short barrel shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot and slugs alternating. I always have this when I go truck camping. As I started walking toward the hill the feeling of being watch became overwhelming. As did the feeling of something evil and dangerous up on the hill. As I got to the bottom of the hill all my instincts were screaming at me danger, danger danger , get the hell out of here. I couldn’t take another step. I slowly backed up several steps , shotgun at the ready and turned around and back to me vehicle. I loaded up my camp gear and got the hell out of there as fast as I could. I knew positively that if I have ventured up there I wouldn’t survive. Bear never before or after that incident acted the way he did and never showed fear like that again.

I cannot explain it, there was something evil there. There was something unearthly, other worldly, I will never know. With the dogs super extraordinary senses he probably knew what was there. I will never know.

Theres actually a little more to this story but I’m late for an appointment and have to go now. Nothing of much interest but I’ll try to add some things later.

I’ve read and heard stories of Bigfoot/Sasquatch/Skunk Ape or whatever your region calls it to be able to strike fear into people and pets. Without being seen and unknown to the person it is happening to. Seems a weird skill to have and use but has served them well for centuries. We only use a small portion of our brain.

    Good read.

I'm not a good story teller but....

There's been a few times out in the woods I've had that uneasy feeling. Mostly though, just negative vibes. Except There's one place we've been a few times, way out in the middle of nowhere TN, our first trip was decent, but I had a weird feeling I didn't really think much untill our next trip. We were supposed to stay a few nights, but after the first night I knew why I felt uneasy before. It felt like something was there watching us. Usually I stay up hanging around the fire for a few hours after my wife goes to bed, but that night i just couldn't.

There was no reason to feel uneasy or afraid, but sometimes I think we just know something isn't right, instinct. My wife on the other hand loves that place, I've told her I'm never going back. We've camped all over the country, spent most of our youth and early adult time in the west, a few cross country trips all over and a bunch now in the southeast. That's the only place I'll never go back to.

Is that true? I thought that was dispelled long ago?

Addendum to my above experience. When I approached the wooded hill it was like my muscles were frozen. Even if I wanted to go further it was like I couldn’t move forward.
Re Bear, he lived to 13 1/2. He hunted waterfowl and pheasant with me until he was 12 and then retired and lived a very happy and comfortable life. He never again experienced fear that I saw. I did hear him growl one other time when another large dog was a little over zealous sniffing inappropriate places.
2 weeks later after I went back up the Sterling lake area for opening deer season. Got up there 2 days early before season opening with two hunting partners. Camped in the same spot. I had informed them of my experience before we went up there. They knew Bear well and knew there was substance to my tale if Bear was frightened.
I no longer had the feeling of being watched but was still a little unsettling, scary being there again.
That first afternoon the 3 of us armed with our deer rifles covered that entire wooded hill area. Walked every inch of it. Only thing we found was an area where the brush was flattened, looked like something like a deer or bear or something had bedded down. Looked it over carefully but couldn’t determine what had been there. Looked for hair, foot prints, rubs, scat (poop) and other signs but found nothing. It just felt weird walking around there. Went up to Sterling twice after that and haven’t been back. I stopped deer hunting cause back pain made it too tough to hike extreme rough terrain like that and transport a deer back to camp.
I had a weird siting up there but nothing to compare with the experience I just described. In fact it was pretty minor.I’ll tell ya all about it sometime. Right now I’m tired of typing.

I’ve only had that uneasy feeling once in over 20 years of hunting in the woods. A few years back I was hunting black bear in the same hollow (near Emporium Pennsylvania) that I have hunted every year. It was the end of the day and I was walking down the logging road headed back to the truck. It had been a pretty good day of seeing game, no bear unfortunately, but still I was content. As I was about 200 yards from the truck something just snapped in my head and it was as if my brain was screaming at me to run, go, get out now! I stopped and looked around thinking, ok this is odd, maybe there is a bear or other predator near by. The woods were quiet with the exception of running water from a nearby stream. Once again I start walking and I get that same overwhelming feeling that I need to run, run as fast as I can. I figure, we’ll if I’m losing my mind, I may as well talk myself down from this, so as I’m walking, I start saying out loud, “you are fine, there is nothing out there, calm down”. I kept repeating that, but I just couldn’t shake that feeling till I got to the road and back in my truck. If I’m being totally honest, had I not had my .308 in my hand, I more than likely would have been sprinting out of those woods that day.
Even more strange to me is that as I was typing this and recounting it all, I started getting goosebumps thinking about it.
Now I’m not saying it was Bigfoot that made me feel that way or even any other predator for that matter, but it is strange how a fight or flight response can be triggered with no perceived threat present.

The 10% use part has been debunked, but there are still portions we don’t know fully what it’s used for.

Wish my grandfather was still around to tell a couple of tall tales he had. Having driven OTR for upwards of 20 years and also being a small time cattle rancher as well as starting his early entrepreneur career as a pulp wood logger he has seen and heard things. The OTR tales could be written off to pre-log long hour hauls of 20+ hours but one in particular was his old faithful companion Brutus. A German shepherd that was as bold and brave as the aforementioned Sprig. The reason this story was remembered from my youth. Brutus was large enough that when I was about 4-5 he picked up a rough cut oak 2x4 used to strip the flatbed 18wheeler trailer when he hauled uncut granite headstones for the local business. He picked it up and shook it about violently enough that it hit me in the forehead and knocked me out in the middle of the yard. I still have the scar just above my eyebrow. Brutus was like the honey Badger and not scared of isht.

So, Paw Paw was awakened one night when Brutus was low growling in the carport. Armed with a little .38spcl he used trucking he went to investigate. In the 40ish acre cow pasture there is a creek that splits it. We called it the back 40 and lower 40 even though it was more like 8 and 20 with a front 40 near the road of maybe another 8. He said Brutus wouldn’t get past the edge of the yard near the gate into the pasture and was acting as Sprig did. Something he had never observed before. Now the creek that splits the fields has a bend in it similar to how the bottom of TX looks on a map. He said there was some strange lights coming from this area but could not make out what it was through the light fog made from the creek. So he went back the 50 yards or so to the house and got a bigger gun and when he came back out to get closer the lights had gone but Brutus still wasn’t having any of it. So he retired for the night and didn’t sleep a wink. First light he went back out and all the way down to the spot only to find a circle burned into the grass with about a 20’ outer diameter and roughly a 15’ inner diameter.

Now I blew this story off for years until I was in high school and working at an ATV shop for my uncle. One slow day I asked about it and he verified he had seen the circle as well as my other uncle. The story of the hollow oak ‘bee tree’ and ghost leading them there was also true and the night they were followed by the UFO on a east/west highway was true. Albeit likely a helicopter transporting from a rural hospital to a larger hospital but this was the early ‘70s. Not like the mediflights we have today. Then there’s the numerous sightings in the woods I don’t remember all the details off. He would use several groups of young men, usually all kin, to help with the pulp wood hauling. Normally a group for 2 days in a row then another the next 2 days. He had 3-4 sets he’d go through and they always asked where they were going that day because some groups would refuse to go into certain woods due to encounters they had previously. Layers of old tales and personal sightings.
