Alright gents, need some assistance. First time Tacoma owner here, and after some hard selling from my brother, I finally purchased a 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro. I drive back and forth 30 miles each way each day for work, all on the highway basically. Truck rides fantastic, but I have always hated Toyota trucks because they’ve always seemed to search for a gear when the cruise is activated. Much to my disappointment, my Tacoma is no different. Well, I added a front spacer kit and some aftermarket wheels and tires,(33” BFG’s), so it’s slightly worse now. So after some advice from quite a few shops, I had some 4.88 Nitro-Gear sets installed. The truck finally goes into 6th gear on the highway now, and does seem to tach out better on RPM’s, but when the cruise is set, it constantly shifts back and forth again! Is there not anything that is offered that can fix this issue? This is literally my only complaint on this truck at all, but good God is this a huge issue for me. Hopefully someone on here can help me with this?

Thanks in advance for any assistance at all!

It's kinda normal for this transmission to shift like that.

Just use S5 instead of D. Seriously. It cuts out that nuisance shifting and RPM hang. No need to buy anything.

    One overdrive is enough.

    Free option:
Keep it under 70, set the transmission to S mode and use the standard cruise control instead of the adaptive option when on the highway.

    Not so free option:
Install a tune to help with shift points.

Find a local guy that does it. Maybe search"custom tune" or something up there on the right.

    A bunch of junk
Like you, I have the same annoyances.
I am having it tuned very soon. This morning i drove around in standard and was easily getting over 20mpg and just shifting along on my own. Set cruise in fifth and sixth and realized I usually had never seen the sixth gear.
Wishing I had bought a MT but the gf cant drive one and is prone to motion sickness. One bad shift and the whole day is ruined!

@PapaRee is whom I'm meeting with soon to get it done.

edit. your truck is sick as hell btw

The KDMax tune I had put on our PRO fixed all the shifting issues with the tranny. Knowing now what that tune would do for the overall driveability of the truck, I'm sorry that I wasn't more aggressive in getting the tune installed.

Next time you get your oil changed at the Toyota dealer, talk to them about the "gear hunting" problem. Ask them if there is an updated T-SB/ECU flash... Otherwise you can look into OvTune.

I had OVTune 2.0 and have since moved to KDMax tune from @PapaRee - KDMax tune + 4.88's is the best my truck has ever driven. Get the KDMax tune, you won't be disappointed.

Now someone just needs to tell @Magnuson that these changes won't hurt their MPGs or CARB cert in CA for their SuperCharger tune. Waiting until they fix their tune to purchase the SC from them...
