I think one of the dudes on here has done footwell lights? @oostroma perhaps? I can’t remember who but I remember some cool photos.

I’m pretty heavily maxed out right now so not super able to try new ideas. Maybe if the dust settles a bit.

You are correct. I did my own puddle lights and footwell lights. Feel free to PM me if someone wants more detail and a parts list.

I liked the job I did on the front doors that I also did puddle lights and footwell lights on the AC doors.

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
I was just thinking that it would be pretty cool to have a harness made that simply turns both top and bottom of the Tacoma tails into full brake/running/turn signals, utilizing the whole red portion of the tail lamp for all those functions instead of the stock split, and retaining the reverse bulb for a dedicated high power setup.

Maybe I've had a few beers, but I would be willing to bet that Dave, being the premier harness maker, has already done this before lol.

I have been so busy flying around I haven't had the chance to install, but Dave's DIR is gonna be the first mod when I get back to this glorious beast! Cheers!

So, what would it look like when braking with hazards on? Same as not braking? Or you were thinking turns would be lower intensity than brake? I guess the 3rd brake light helps some but I tend to like amber for a clear indication of a turn.

I remember it now! It was a repurposed Metra connectors. So yeah, it was a Frankenstein job for testing. I was playing around with tapping the cargo switch for illumination, so wanted to make sure it would work. So I spliced a couple of Metra kits together. It worked, but after changing my mind on the AUTO switch, I just pulled illumination from there (in light green and tan, so balance has been restored)

@daveeasa this sounds familiar :rofl:I was telling Dave a few days (or weeks, it’s been a long month) that this is my plan, because f**k amber! I even ordered the 921s for the reverse lights from VLEDs. Unfortunately it requires a little more than just wiring. The brake would defeat the turn signal without some added logic. As to the hazard issue, that is this weekends plan to sort out. My initial thinking is brake>hazards for priority, but I would be able to get away with that because I will have alternate turn signals. Of course, if I am doing all red turns in the rear, I have to explain to @memario1214 that even 8 months later I am still changing my mind… he’lol be so happy to hear that :laughing:

But assuming I was a regular person without 20 turn signals, what would the preference be? Brake defeats hazards, or hazards defeat brake? Tough call.

Yes exactly! Same as not braking, say at a stoplight with left turn signal on and brakes on, right tail light is steady full brake, left is just flashing on and off at full brightness, both top and bottom bulb. I was just throwing it out there, maybe as a means for someone who would want to put emphasis on their reverse light but also fully utilize the entire housing. I don't know how feasible this is or whether it's even a good idea, and I am thinking it might be more complicated than is necessary, but I was just thinking about alternate braking setups.

It is absolutely more complicated than it should be, but that is what makes it fun. I think maybe splitting the controls from just left and tight to top/bottom/left/right. Doing that, the turn signal would take priority over the brake like you describe with the full “C” flashing, and the other side full “C” for the brake. But if the hazards are turned on, the top would flash with the hazards while the bottom functions as brake?

I think ideal is something like what MESO is doing with the new Morimoto taillight. Brake & turn all full sized in the same space with turn as reverse sequential. A red turn option might make you all happy? But maybe hard to see a brake light + turn in the same space if the same color?

I am pretty sure the Meso tails are either amber turn or red brake, so both aren’t lit at the same time?

My thought was that the hazards take priority over the brake because you will be using turn signals far more often, unless of course if you drive a BMW, where signals were never even a factory option. I guess this opens a whole new can o' worms that this layperson can't really comprehend right now.

Regular people without 20 turn signals sooooo don't hang out on TW on the custom harness pages, lol.

The way I plan on doing it, it would be possible to separate the turns from the hazards. So it would be possible to have turns>brake>hazards, but since hazards>turn form the ECU, it would really be a rock>paper>scissors kind of deal I suppose. Just in case it wasn’t complicated enough.

That sounds like like the best possible scenario. The worst thing that can be done I think is make a concept meant to increase safety be a liability. It sounds like it would need some pretty thorough planning out and require more time than Dave has at the moment though.

If it were me, I'd get a meso total tail stage one and make a custom red/white switchback bulb for the reverse/turn.

I kind of kicked around the idea of using just a red for turn in the reverse well and having the reverse lights solely on auxiliary lights in the rear. But then I thought I’d like the full C more, and things just kind of escalated to stupid from there :anonymous:

What you guys are balling around was covered wayy back and uses what is called a TaaT (or TaT) module. It allows full “C” to operate as Tail, Stop, and Turn. You do have some of the shortcomings you mentioned, but the current setup doesn’t have yellow in the tail, so your concerns about turn and hazard are already present/resolved. If you need, I can certainly find that thread.
