Wheel measurements not as advertised?

So I measured my wheels today out of curiousity and discovered some weird results. I ended up with almost 6" backspacing and a wheel width of about 9" but the backspacing is supposed to be 4.5" and the width is supposed to be 8". They are ATX Chambers. One reason wanted to measure them is because they don't seem to stick out as far as some other wheels I've seen with 4.5" backspacing. And American Racing doesn't advertising making these wheels with anything more than 4.5" bs. Do manufacturers not use actual numbers or something and just make up numbers that are popular? Has anyone else had this problem? btw I didn't take the wheel off to measure so my measurements may not have been exact, but they are definitely not as advertised. I don't have any real good photos of the wheel, but here's one to give you an idea if it helps.

Ya those look more like how the stock wheels look more than how mine with 4.5" BS look.

I can take a picture with that same angel for comparison purpose if you would like to use underneath your picture..

Since you didn't take the wheel off, did you measure backspacing as the back edge fo the rim to the rim seat? or did you measure it to one of the spokes?

 

I measured it from the inside edge of the wheel to the innermost point of the spoke nearest to the lug nuts

 

Hmm sounds like you did it right....

 

Wheel witdh is a measurement of the inside witdh (bead to bead). It doesn't include the thickness of the lip which is why your 8" rim measures wider on the outside.

Not sure where backspacing is technically measured from but I would guess its also measured from the bead...

 

ya that may account for some of it, but it still seems the backspacing is way off.

ya this measurment on mine was only about 2". Now I'm definitley leanin towards buyin some new wheels.

 

I am trying to find some 16x8 with 4" BS but kinda hard. I think I found some Pro-Comp or something but they dont clear the caliper

 

ya mickey thompson makes some 16x8" with 3-5/8 bs or something like that. I've been lookin at those.

I should mention I want flat black...and dont really want to buy wheels to powdercoat them after the fact.

 

Those come with -22 offset...would that make it more like 3" BS?

 

ya i dont care for the chrome too much either. -22mm apparently = 3-5/8 bs according to mickey thompson

This would be frontspacing, not backspacing .

So it would change depending on the thickness of the spokes.
