Vibration at 60 MPH???

I am noticing that when driving on the highway, as I reach about 60 MPH there is some engine/tranny vibration, which improves and goes away at higher speeds. It is like a low frequency vibration/humm. It is not very bad, but I wonder where is it coming from?

The break pedal does not have the vibration, which makes me think it is coming from the engine/tranny/rear, not the weehls or front end. BTW, I am in 2 Wheel drive.

Has anyone noticed this? I have a 2011 Auto TRD Off Road, with only 260 miles on it so far.

Got a 2011DC TRD Auto mid December now having 800 miles and have yet to experience what you are describing. Highway speeds here 65-75 mph.

I have the very same problem and the very same truck as you (except mines an 09). It does it at about 1800 rpm and 60-65 mph. I've had the tech ride along and he said my tires needed to be balanced. I had the tires rotated and balanced and an alignment done and it still does it. They then tell me it's my tires lol- my truck is 100% stock. I must admit the vibration is irritating as hell. From what I understand there is a trans mount TSB and I might see if I can get this done.

 

What makes you certain it's not the wheels or tires?

Driving in snow does that to my truck. The snow freezes up in the wheels and stuff and causes vibrations from 55 mph to about 65 mph. I just do a self serve underbody wash and that gets rid of the vibration. Hope this might help too. BTW it only does it to the rear on my truck not the front.

 

I was thinking of mounts too, reaching maximum oscillation at some engine RPM, coinciding with 60 - 65 MPH! I am putting new tires end of the week, so I will check under it when it is on the lift before I talk with the dealer (I know their answers already; "it is normal" "you are looking for minor problems" "I don't hear anything".....

 

The vibration is definately not coming from the fron end. My best guess is tranny or tranny mount, or possibly your suggestion of accumulation on the tires.

I am a believer of Vibration caused by objects in the wheels:
After a fishing expedition on soft sand, and some dune driving, I had to stop on the side of the highway driving my wife's Commander this summer after the whole front end shook like it was coming apart. The rotors were full of sand. I cleaned some of it and it got better.

BTW: I had to get new rotors and that was the last time I was allowed to take my wife's Commander on the beach! So I had no choice but to start breaking in my Tacoma before the fishing season starts

Snow gets stuck inside the tires and will cause a vibration. Carwash is all you need.

 

I have the same issue, but with my Volvo S40. It's a 2009 Volvo and I've taken great car for it and have not added any mod's. I feel the vibration at EXACTLY 64-65 mph. However, when I speed beyond or slow below that range it goes away. The vibration is not in any of the pedals and honestly feels like the engine block is just loose? I'm not great with cars but I find it mighty irritating as well.

This is a relatively new symptom. I never noticed it prior to before 20,000-24,000 miles but now it's like clock work, I hit that range and it reappears.

AHAHAHA. I hate dealerships! Strong word but they abuse their position and power. 90% of all of dealerships can solve our problems if they just spend a little effort. Imagine that, real work. My POV is that since they don't make any extra cash that they shouldn't put forth the extra effort. LAZY/SELFISH.

I'd do it myself if I knew how or how to go about the problem, but isn't that why dealerships/service department exists?

But really I'd like to just be a complete asshole to my dealership, only thing that holds me back is that where else will I go after they kick me off and call the rent-a-cops?

 

Yeah that's the only thing I hate about the snow lol, otherwise playing in it is fun But I guess it's a good thing that the snow does this to my truck because it gets me to wash it after every snow storm so i get all the crap off of my frame. Good luck with that though, hopefully it's as easy as a ten dollar car wash

 

So the general consensus is that the vibration effect is from objects inside the tires?

If so, how come the vibration is so constant?
I'm not sure if that's the right word, constant, but its like clockwork at 64-66mph the vibration occurs and then disappears when traveling slower/faster.

 

MAybe they need to be balanced? I'm not sure. I know that even when i do wash it I still get a slight shake in the rear, but i think that's because i blasted the balancing weights off with a power washer when I was getting rid of the snow. Not sure though.

 

I've had this vibration problem since I got my Taco this summer. For me, it's between 55-65 ish. I figured it was the tires, but I haven't had it looked at yet since I am hoping to upgrade to tires sometime in the next few weeks. Will let you guys know what happens...

 

This vibration is NOT tires. My truck does it too. It's a bone stock 05 double cab short bed with an automatic. Does it in 4wd too. My 05 access cab 4 cylinder 4x4 didn't do it. However I do recall my brother in law's 05 Access cab V6 6 speed feeling much "courser" in general than my 4 cylinder in relation to the drivetrain feel in general. But I don't think it does this specifically. I've driven that truck quite a bit but not since I bought my double cab. On my truck it's a very minor vibration/resonance from about 1700 to 2100 RPM which is pretty much anywhere from 57 to about 70. I have checked the service history on my truck through Toyota and it never had the rear trans mount TSB done. I suspect it's either this or perhaps the driveshaft causing the vibration. On my truck when it's doing this and I shift it into 4th causing the rpm's to rise above 2100rpm it stops. This would seem to be more likely an issue with the trans mount. This vibration concerned me when I bought my truck but it is very minor and I've read on a number of forums that it's very common on automatics. I would love it gone, but I'm not currently financially able to just start tossing parts at it in hopes of a fix. So if someone does actually resolve it (I've never heard of this happening in all the research I've done) please let us all know how it was done.

 

I just replaced my tires and the vibration is still there.
It seems like it is some resonance is occuring at about 1800 RPM, about 62 MPH??? I used to work on older simpler autos, so the following "guess" may not be valid at all:

Maybe the transmission which is controlled by the computer now, is switching between a lower to a higher ratio and it is at a transition point. The engineers may not have been able to tune this out or smooth it out, so it is grinding away, until it goes into the highest gear ratio.

Or it could be that entire rear end reaches the maximum resonance, (maximum vibration) at about 62 MPH?

The vibration is only felt at the gas pedal, not the brake pedal. It is not a front end or wheel issue.

I plan to take it in to the dealer soon....I will keep you posted.

 

Generally vibes at 60 mph is caused by wheel ballance.
Even if they are new it is a possibility that they were not ballanced correctly.
It may be something else but 60 ish usually indicates wheel ballance is off.

I just had a similiar problem after rotating my wheels. At 60 mph, my steering wheel started to go crazy. At about 70 mph it went away. It was just a tire balance issue. Not sure what your issue is.

 

I get no vibration on the steering wheel, no vibration on the break pedal, just on the gas pedal and under the seat.

Again, this is a very slight hum, I think most people may not even notice it, or think it is normal. Unfortunately, I have worked on cars since I was 16, so I have the tendency to "hear" more car talk.
