I am sure there are already posts out there (but hey I am new)--
wondering if anyone has painted bare metal or aluminum bars with bed liner

Did you like the look? Easy to work with? I am cheap also

    Looking for flat black appearance.

    Thanks.

There are no short cuts to painting.

    Prep the metal.
    Prime
    Then Paint.

Even "bedliner" requires preparation of the surface.

All of my sliders, skids, bumpers, etc on my last two Tacomas were bedliner painted. Clean the metal with a green scotchbrite pad, rags and alcohol, spray a layer of primer, a layer of flat black and then a as much bedliner as you want.

Rustoleum normally but I have used the Herculiner spray a few times. I haven't noticed a difference in quality between the two though, Rustoleum was just the cheapest and easiest to find most of the time.

One thing about the Rusto is you'll never get it clean - it's able to trap dust in the grit. If it's not an issue, no worries.

Being cheap and proper paint prep do not go together. As others mentioned prep work is key.

It’s more about attention to detail. 3M red scotchbrite and acetone.

Got it. 1. Prep work. 2. Prep work. followed by 3. Prep work.
I have 2 increasing grit sandpaper and acetone so far.
Probably going to go with Duplicolor spray in liner as others look too glossy for my taste.
    Thanks for all the input.

What grit are you starting at - normally I wouldn’t go too low as aluminum is soft enough it’ll scuff up easily and I’d consider aluminum primer.
