That's absolutely the case in my boat. I just grin and bare it, assuming it isn't winter and the water is above 70°.

Yeah it will be a good bit of work, but I've been planning it out and it shouldn't be too bad. Absolutely needs it, fishing 2 people is really tight and there's almost no storage to speak of as it is. Also going to eventually make a hinging down rear deck extension that will create standing room over the gas and battery in the bilge. Personally I have enjoyed modifying the boat but I do envy the fact that yours is so well put together already. I'd love to have that 60 HP out back too, that's nice.

Well see I fish out of the San Joaquin reservoir AKA The Delta here in California. 12 mph winds are not too horrible AND the norm, particularly this summer, but anything past 18 and I'm usually seeking protection within tulies or similar covers. It's all a balancing act on these tinnies. It's not too bad once you get a feel for it. If you can manage a wide stance then it's all business from there. Plus spot lock is an absolute savior on this rig. I would never own another boat without it now.

You know you own a 60HP as well if you have a 50 right? They are both the 995cc 1.0L class so all it takes is some internal revisions to convert it.

Don't let it's simplistic looks fool you. This boat came even more barebones as they come straight from the showroom floor as well as the previous owner. I put in some some serious hours transforming this boat into what it is, but now that it is about 98% done I get to enjoy the fruits of my hard labors.

Spot lock is absolutely amazing. I wouldn't want to own a boat again without one and wireless control. Having it linked to my fishfinder for control/autopilot and around my neck is game changing.

It's absolutely the single best tool I've ever owned on my boat. The ability to take care of what you need to while you're sitting around a bunch of waves incoming or just current taking you without having to mess with the pedal is the absolute best.

I've got the 40 HP merc. She gets going about 32 mph though, fast enough for anything but really long runs.

It's still the 1.0L class bro. All you need is a 60 HP computer and to remove the restrictor ring from the intake and boom, you have an extra 20HP right there and an easy 8-10 mph right there. ;)

Just saying... Fortune favors the bold. :D

Restoring an 80's Boston Whaler 13'. Repaired and painted the top edge. Removed the nasty seats. Will be installing original Mahogany seats soon.

Impressive. Had a 2021 Tracker 190TX Tournament Edition with a 115 Pro XS and seen 46mph on GPS once ran a steady 44mph

I think the overall length is a huge factor when you are talking about power to weight ratio regarding any boat. A 19 foot Tracker will require a larger horsepower engine to get it up to similar speeds simply due to the fact that more of the physical surface of the boat is running in the water, increasing the overall resistance the engine has to overcome to reach higher speeds. Since mine is a 16'8" (1'11" shorter than the 190) and in my case about 200 - 250 lbs lighter than the 190 and 195 models it can really get moving a lot faster from the dig and maintain speeds close to models with an engine which requires 40 - 55+ more HP just to stay those speeds.

Yep haha. A couple rubber snakes really help to keep the birds away from the boat believe it or not. When they sit on it they shit on it.

My dad taught me the trick, he uses rubber snakes and a big plastic owl to keep birds away from his back yard bar.

Wanted to get some opinions. I'm thinking about picking up a Boston Whaler 170 Montauk maybe early next year. We live on Lake Wylie in Charlotte so I'd be on freshwater 98% of the time but I'd to be able to easily trailer down to fish intercoastal and maybe a little offshore on nice days. We already have a 2021 Bennington 22' Pontoon so the Montauk would be mainly for fishing with my son (eventually, he is only 12 weeks now) plus something my wife can easily handle on her own. We'd still use the Benny mostly for cruising as a family and with friends. Originally I had considered a 150 because I want something that my son could handle easily as he gets older but now I'm thinking the 170 may be better choice? I know the Whalers are a little spendy but they hold value due to the quality and reputation.

I'd go with the 170. Your boy won't have any problems handling it himself, especially since it sounds like it would be growing up on that boat. I launch/fish/load my boat that is pretty much the same size as the 170 without problems.

Yeah he is just a little squirt now but he will grow up on the water so I think he will grow into it quickly. I want to be able to trailer it easily and not kill the Tacoma or wife 4runner towing it down to the coast but still be able to handle a little chop if need be. I think the 17' will do the trick.

I agree with the previous post, a 17' whaler seems like a good balance of safe and stable and easy to handle. I wouldn't want anything smaller than my 16' and once your son is full sized he'd probably agree, especially if he'd like to take a friend fishing with him.
