TRD Skid with RCI Skid plates

hi, I have got a TRD skid plate on my v6 4x4 tacoma, thinking about getting an RCI Transmission skid as well. Just for some light trail roads occasionally,. I am worried about the additional weight however, aluminum is 20+ pounds lighter. Is this something That I am over thinking? Thank you

 

If you are worried about 20lbs i hope you never have passengers or go camping or get groceries.

 

Guess it depends on your expectations.
- Fuel mileage? Weight matters (should be a no brainer).
- Cargo capacity? Weight matters (added accessory weight reduces cargo capacity).
- Towing capacity? Weight matters (reduces acceptable tongue load).
- Your real off-road travels? For really rocky or truly off-road driving (i.e. through the brush rather than around it), an extra skid might be helpful.
Those are my thoughts.

 

Don’t over think it

 

I noticed a very slight difference when I added the full steel skid set from RCI, but just barely, think it has something to do with that weight being lower on the truck.

I think you'll be just fine adding one aluminum skid.

 

thanks for your help. Reason I asked was that a local aftermarket parts shop made the comment to me that steel/aluminum skids would alter the driving dynamics. Didn't really make sense to me however I wanted to ask for a real world experience. Thanks for the help!

 

Are you sure the RCI skid is compatible with the TRD Pro skid?

The only skid I'm aware of that works with the Pro skid is the CBI rear skid.

 

Per their website, their transmission skid works with the TRD skid

 

I can confirm via real world experience the RCI skids work with the TRD skid

 

I can also confirm the RCI transmission skid works with the TRD Pro skid. @TacomaRoy I noticed no difference after adding the TRD Pro skid or the RCI aluminum transmission skid plate

 

X2 I have TRD pro skid with RCI transmission and transfer case skids. But I ordered the RCI front skid plate because you need spacers to run the TRD and RCI, and I don’t like the angle of the plates at all

 

Yeah I have the RCI front skid plate sitting in my garage. Maybe some day I'll actually put it on.

 

Definitely fits. Not as flush as it would be with a front RCI skid, but it fits.


Make sure to notate to RCI that you're using a TRD skid, you need a separate hardware kit that is not included with the trans skid.

 

I ran all aluminum RCI stuff on my 4runner from front to transfer case and you don't even notice the weight. Literally not in the slightest.

 

Hey man, question for the transmission plate install with the TRD pro skid. Do you place the spacer at all with the bolt? Did you put it between the TRD pro skid plate and the transmission skid? Not sure where to put it since I got the plate from a friend and can't find clear instructions online. Appreciate the help!

Every thing adds up, a pound here and 20 pounds there. I was mainly concerned with weight and mostly concerned with price on my build. I added some weight and sacrificed aerodynamic's for sure. It's all a trade off at best. If you are going to use/need the things you are adding then ..... well Ya get my point.

 

I have since upgraded to their full kit. But the spacer will go on the frame, then stack the skids accordingly (trans then engine last).

I don't think I'd be the best resource for your question. I would send a picture of the hardware you have to RCI and see what they say.
