In need of some advice. 2 weeks ago I bought new ko2s. My 2020 OR got robbed (oh my b burglarized lol) while I was sleeping during the recent hurricane. I live in Rhode Island and in a private neighborhood. Sunday morning, I went outside to grab some cash I accidentally left in my unlocked truck. (went to atm night before to deposit a lot of cash and kept some smaller bills on me pretty dumb) No other neighbors cars were touched and many were left unlocked too. Whole thing feels weird to me. Also someone sitting inside of my tacoma that idk bothers me my truck even smelt like cologne the next morning. F*ck that I don’t even eat or smoke in my truck. Yea got Ocd or maybe its just because my truck was 42k.
Cash, some papers with my address, the tire lock, a sweatshirt, and nikes all gone.
Do you think a robber would go through the trouble of coming back for the tires?
Or is this just a case of he prob took the lock accidentally/didnt know what it was?
With the lock taken there is no way to 100% say it was just a theft for the cash which sucks and the tires only have 300 miles on them. I have so many cameras too which makes this whole thing confusing. Some are on trees right next to my truck. This guy probably saw a camera 5 feet away from his head when entering my truck and went in anyway and still checked my Leer too. Barely lost power but the wifi being out made most of my cameras not work except for the Ring.

PS I know they can come off without the lock.. It would be much easier and quieter to take them off with.

Buy new tire locks, and not the factory Toyota ones. I would. Tires aren’t cheap and there might be a little wait on getting what you want.

Bummer dude - all your stuff is probably for sale at some roadside yard sale along with 500 angle grinders and inexplicable mixtures of tools teddy bears and Nikes. Yard sales in my region include magenta painted tools. Nuclear plants paint tools magenta if they are from the "hot' tool room. I assume all the crap is stolen. The cash bought Naty Lite, Tahoe cigs and meth. BTW - wads of cash are what some Cops call "Probable cause" and earn you some extra attention and possible civil asset forfeiture.

    I busted a wheel lock once…

it took about three good whacks with a crack hammer, on the corner of a cold chisel, to spin it right off.

I doubt they would come back for the tires. Curious about the wheel lock key, wasn't it in the bag with the jack accessories? Did you order a spare lock when the truck was new or at least write the number down?
    Sorry about your misfortune.
Been thinking about security cameras myself and even with a low crime rate there's always that possibility.

Envelope of cash in an unlocked truck? C’mon man. What did you expect?

Plenty of scumbags check door handles looking for an easy score and you gave them a layup.

wheel locks are super easy to defeat regardless of having the key. If they want your wheels they’ll have them with or without the key.

On a side note, I had something similar happen to my family (except they attempted to break into my home). Dogs are a deterrent for some, but unless you purchased and trained your dogs for protection only and prepared to send them out for what might be their last day alive…wouldn’t blame them. Most likely sleeping next to you when this happened. Mine sleeps by the front door most of the time.

Some of the things I would add is a motion sensor flood light out front and a drive way alarm.

Locking the vehicle doesn't stop someone who wants in and often leads to more damage. I've had someone break into my vehicles 3 times in 40+ years of driving. Only once because I didn't lock it. A thief ripped the canvas top open to get into my Jeep Wrangler. The same thief broke windows on several neighbors vehicles that night. He didn't get anything, but did a lot of damage.

I lost a gun to a thief once while eating lunch. I locked my truck as I was walking away with the remote. Thieves can buy scanners to steal your signal and clone another remote. That is apparently what happened because security video showed someone pull up and stop in front of my truck. They used a remote to unlock the doors. They reached inside and went through my console and glove box. They were gone in 30 seconds and locked the truck before leaving. They had a description of the guy, but were unable to get a tag number.

The gun was recovered a few months later in Baltimore, 700 miles away. To get it would have required me to drive 2 full days and pay for a night in a hotel to get a $250 gun back. I told them to just keep it.

My first car break in, they ripped up the dash to get the stereo out. Cut wires, everything... what a mess. The car was locked.

It was not a good area and no garage, and I didn't even bother to replace the stereo. I started to leave the car unlocked, and one day found that the door lock had been picked off! The thief could have just picked up the handle!

    Shortly after, I left Sacramento.

If you are really OCD about the truck, it might be worth signing up to the Tacoma app. I’m still on the free trial, but it does send you alerts if doors are unlocked or windows left open. You can lock the doors remotely through the app.

Thieves go to nice neighborhoods because that’s where the good stuff is. A motion sensor light is a good investment.

This is true. If they want it bad enough they'll get it.

HOWEVER, the majority of thieves are looking for the easy target which is the item that's out in the open or the unlocked vehicle. No one questions people that look like they know what they're doing unless they witness the full event. What's more is a lot of times these people aren't driving and can only carry so much which may explain why no one else got hit. That or they did get hit but never knew it since they really didn't have anything in their vehicles.

Sorry dude. That’s always such a gut punch. I hate thieves. I really wouldn’t worry about the tires. I’m pretty sure Toyota only has like 5 or 6 different tire locks, they aren’t all unique like keys. Even if they were, as mentioned above, they are very easy to break off anyway. If you are gonna worry about it, your best bet would be aftermarket wheel locks, as mentioned above. At least that way the one the thief has wouldn’t match up to the ones on the truck… Also, if you start locking your doors now, look into the glass break sensor so your alarm goes off when a window is broken. If he found easy cash in your truck, he may come back…

    Good luck!

People blaming OP for leaving his truck unlocked at his house can fuck right off. How about we blame people like you who make excuses for scum bags rather than hold them accountable?

You people are disgusting and pathetic.

Yep. The OP wasn't even hiding the fact and knew it was a foolish move. No sense even saying blame shit as if he was a root cause.........

Anyway, just replace the wheel locks, double up your perimeter security and never depend on the "good neighborhood". Tons and tons of people have addict offspring living right in the same house, guest house, over the garage, etc.....in some very posh bougie hoods. They check car doors almost every night as part of the routine, or just when jonesing - feel lucky? LIGHTS. FENCES. DOGS. ALARMS. LOCKS. CAMERAS (to watch the action):D:ballchain: Then for personal protection inside the house, a 230 pound spouse and a slingshot. Oh and 911.:fingerscrossed::crapstorm:

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
If you don’t have a Motion Camera on your Truck you should get one. I have 8 ring cameras, flood light versions as well as others. They even make cameras for your truck, just for this purpose.

My house is right in the middle of downtown Atlanta, and this city is rough as fuck! I dealt with the same thing for a short while, then the word on the street was probably not to mess with that guy.

I will say that I live amongst animals, and the only way to keep them out of your shit is to have the jump on them.
It very important you don’t do go outside after them. My neighbor not far from me was shot at once doing so.
But with the cameras, you could let them know they won’t be able to fuck with your shit ever again without you knowing. My cameras actually have a sirens built into them, that is also connected to a bull horn siren.

For instance, when the last encounter I had, I actually saw the guys come into my yard, and begin to go into my pole barn. I have a pack of dogs that don’t like people at all. I tripped my lights and Siren Alarms. Let’s just say I let them out to pee….those dudes got so fucked up from my 4 90lb dogs….all I could hear was screaming bro!!!
One of my dogs brought back the guys pants. But dude you should have heard the sounds, it literally sounded like a horror movie, I heard a guy begging for his life. The guys made it out of my yard alive at night that night, but the scene I found in the am was no joke, and my pups had done their job!!! I doubt they would ever step foot in my yard. If so my pups already have a taste for them.

I am sorry you are going thru this, criminals are everywhere, you have to out smart them at their own game.

You can't leave anything unlocked these days no matter how nice a neighborhood you live in. Its a different world today. I thought the same for all the years living here till one day someone entered my home when no one was around. They pooped all over my bathroom, ate my food, and left a mess. I admit i was stupid for leaving the doors unlocked never having an issue as such all the time living there.

I don't think anyone was making excuses but you also have to cover your own ass. I don't even like to leave my windows down in my parent's driveway in the middle of nowhere let alone at my apartment complex, which is in a nice area.
