Drawbacks of upsizing tire size

    Not really noticeable. Radio is on as well so that could be a reason but I don’t think I really hear much even with it off. Really just depends on what kind of tires your going with. Wildpeaks are quiet, have a good look, plenty of tread, good for wet weather, and we’re at one point a decent priced tire. Now they’ve gone up $60-$70 a tire in the last year and a half. Still worth it though and if you wait for Discount Tire Direct to have a flash sale you can save some money. Can’t really compare them to anything else because Its been years since I had my nitto grapplers on my old truck. I was a F-16 Crew Chief and then got out and fiddled on some MQ-1s & MQ-9s overseas for a few years.

    If you plan to go off-road then airing down is the best tire mod you can do for traction (which is one of the the goals in off-roading). Even airing down you stock tires will make a world of difference. That being said I went with General Grabber ATX 265/75R16. They are more aggressive (both in looks and traction) over the OEM tires. I did feel about a 1 to 1.5 MPG hit with them though. I have no clearance issues. I am very happy with them.


    Oh, I am still on stock TRD OR 4x4 wheels

    Thanks for the info, do you think a 285/70(or75)R16 would also work? Or would this rub? I'm hoping to gain an inch or so of additional clearance with a tire upgrade only. The fuel and speedometer hits are not important to me being my typical driving is just around town with a very occasional highway excursion. Thanks again for the info.

    265/75R16s are 30.6" tall by 10.4" wide
    285/70R16s would be 31.7" tall by 11.2" wide
    285/70R17s would be 33.8" tall by 11.2" wide

    I am neither a tire fitment or suspension expert but I think that 285 width (11.2") tires will have a higher likelihood of rubbing, especially at the 33.8" height but also maybe at the 31.7" height and mostly when you turn and compress your suspension. Turning the wheel throws the outer/inner edge of the tire much closer to the rear wheel well. That is where most rubbing comes into play. That is why some people who do over sized tires also do the Cab Mount Chop (this moves the location where the body of the truck attaches to the frame towards the back a few inches). Also if you have adjustable UCAs (non-OEM like SPCs), you can have the alignment shop shift the caster forward a little to help the rear clearance but that may have other ramifications regarding handling, tire wear, etc.

    So, its not just the height, but the height, width and caster that determine if you will have rubbing.

    Oh yeah, also depending on what wheels you get, the offset will play a role.

    Lift has not as much to do with eliminating rubbing as most people think since the tire will still go into the wheel well when compressing suspension.

    I'm still on OEM 265/70/16 and am considering 267/75/16 down the road. I go back and forth on that. Honestly the only advantage I can see to going to this slightly taller tire is looks. Not much in the way of OR performance, yet a hit on on road mileage and low end, get off the line torque unless you regear which makes no sense with that little bit of added diameter. Still have a at least 20,000 miles left on the OEM tires which, contrary to what some say, I think looks and preforms pretty well. When the time comes, I'll make the decision. If I can get into the 75's at close to the cost of the 70's I'll probably go that way, but won't pay a large premium.

    I have upsized on a few vehicles. What kills me the most is the noticeable loss of power and the increased braking range.

    I bit the bullet and went to 265/75/16 Toyo AT3 with 5 tires. Also bought a matching OR wheel and am doing 5 tire rotations to use up that 5th tire just in case I decide to go back to stock I haven’t totally wasted the cost of the spare.

    Really happy with the decision. I also did the speedo calibration because I’m OCD.

    If you’re asking me, there are several things I like.
    • I haven’t seemed to notice an mpg hit and I’m several thousand miles into it.
    • Definitely a little more aggressive look than the GY Kevlars.
    • Road noise is honestly the same or *maybe* marginally more? Then again I have a Gobi roof rack which adds a little noise and my highway speeds are 80mph. And, my hearing ain’t so great these days. My other ride is a flat six so I don’t have a ‘quiet’ ride to compare against.
    • They seem to fill the wheel well a little more proportionally than stock and I have no worries about them looking small if I do a 1-2” lift with 6112/5160.
    • Cost was of course a factor: 5 tires, 1 wheel, and a speedo calibrator. For me, that’s been the only downside.
    I think I did them sometime around May, so reference my mileage history below. I went with the Toyo AT3 based on reviews, looks, and weight.

    About the time I did these, I think DT came out with a Goodyear zclusive that seems to be a milder version of the Duratrac. If I had known, I might have gone with them because I really like their look.

    I wasn’t quite ready to go full-on 255/85/65 because those tires tend to be E rated and the selection is quite limited.

    <edit>. Handling. I can’t speak to OffRoad performance. But I can speak to weather and stability. They do great in the wet stuff. As for stability, the DCSB OR is a terrible vehicle to evaluate wheel stability because it tends to dive and roll naturally. I don’t drive aggressively, but haven’t noticed a change from stock. I do tend to run 1-2 psi higher than stock though.

    I have the exact same model, and I upsized to the awesome 265/75/16 Duratracs. C Load, 6 Ply. Since they have the 3 peak snow designation, I sold off my dedicated winter tire package. NO regret.

    2 years later, I upsized to the awesome Bilstein 5100 2/1" Lift, and 1" rear block, (same as the OEM TRD lift), except I kept my OEM rear shocks, since I own the OR model.

    Love everything about it, but once I wear out my Duratracs, I'm going 255 Pizza Cutter. Either 255/85/16 or 255/80/17, as I can get them in a A/T. Unfortunately they are all E rated at this size.

    Can't think of any drawback. :notsure:

    I honestly don’t recall the rating for the ones on my FJ. They lasted a long time, but we’re noisy as hell even with rotations every 5k.

    I had a set of GY SilentArmors that went 85k on the FJ and were a great road tire. Meh in the wet or snow.

    Ya, kinda hard to compare an aggressive A/T to a SilentArmore tire. I would think any aggressive AT or MT knobby tire would get loud eventually.

    Price you gotta pay for wanting off road tires, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I was embarrassed to rock the OEM Kevlar "Highway tires". :cheers:

    Hey, Splitbolt says he's running LT/265/75/16/E tires but made no comment on how he likes that over stock size? (265/70-16) How about it I'm about to get some Wildpeaks in Splitbolts size, any noticable drawbacks? My primary use is under 100 mile weekly jaunts with an occasional (anual trip) 1000 miler, some mild off-road here in the Smokies. Thanks!!
