I had the same issue with the shop that did my alignment. So when my VCS and pre-collision malfunction codes turned up on my dashboard, the shop said that as long as my truck is aligned with their computer. They have done their job. As far as fault codes comes up, not their problem and to see my dealership to reset it or calibrate it with their special tool. What was this special tool?? Knowing that the stealership would charge me an arm and a leg, I decided to do some TW forum reading, youtube troubleshooting and whatever else is out there. I've been reading up and had the same problems with the VCS and "pre-collision system malfunction codes, see your dealer" codes. I went to several auto shops who quoted me $140 p/h for diagnose and then to calibrate to zero for the VCS and for the collision sensor to do a "special tool" to be calibrated. estimate $700- $1k! Out of all the 5 shops I went to Only one shop who was able to do a free scan with his professional obd2 scanner tool. But wasn't able to read the fault code due to his scanner was not up to date with newer models 2019 and up.

I was running out of options and since I have a 2019 and not be able to do the paperclip reset like the older models, I finally decided to get the right scanner for the job, product down below. This was a lifesaver and will save me $$ in the long run. Probably paid for itself already and then some.

And since I maintain my vehicles mostly. And since I've been hitting the trails more often, I'm pretty sure this messages will probably come up again. As long you update the scanner via usb to computer and if it's all aligned I could just clear the codes again. Hope this helps!

Btw, I'm not an affiliate or any sponsor. Just a regular guy who wants these codes to clear up, barring no major real problems to my truck. I've tried several other obd2 scanner with no luck but this one cleared it. Just my 2 cents and hoping to help others with this fix..

I tried this a hundred times on my 2018 OR and it does not work with a paperclip or wire jumper. I ended up getting a cheap Techstream and it seemed to work. But, what I really wanted was for it to stop engine braking when in 4hi on hill climbs and that did not fix the problem. I just run 4lo and manually select my gears now.

I bought scanner and cleared the code. Turned out the lift made it throw a steering alignment code that through off the TSS. All good now. Thanks again!

Did you buy the same scanner that Arnel linked or did you find another one that works?

If not, I ended up buying the Innova 5210 from a local auto store. It was only $100 and it worked perfectly.

I know is old AF, but I want to confirm you used a innova 5210 to reset/clear your VSC light on a 3rd gen?

Hey fellas- I have the same problem, I tried the paper clip method and it didn't work. I ordered the innova 5110 to try to clear it and it clears and pops back up with "no communication with steering angle sensor module". If I had to guess I have a loose wire or pin from all the under dash work that has been done for lights ect. Has anyone replaced or DIAG the steering angle sensor? How bad is it? I have watched some Youtube on what to do, but nothing shows a tacoma, just other toyota models.
If you have any insight to how to get in there and look for a loose wire or have replaced one, please drop some knowledge before I have to get into removing my shrouds, steering wheel, and a whole bunch of stuff I don't really want to do.

Can you see the wires for the sensor if you remove some shrouds? maybe I can find a loose pin and shove it back in before I have to replace? Any insight from DIYers or Yota Techs will be much appreciated.

little back story- I got an alignment before a wheeling trip to Moab, as I pull out of 4wp the VSC light comes on. I wasn't worried bc I have seen the paper clip trick. I call 4wp and tell them. Go wheeling for 5 days. Call 4wp again when I get back, and they have no record of the call on my file and they tell me that it could of happened on my trip and will charge me to reset. I don't worry about it for 3 months. Winter comes and I would like my VSC to work. Start diving back into it all again. Take it to Mountain Yotas and I have a few codes. Go under dash and find a clip disconnected on my aftermarket remote start. Reconnect and check engine goes away. Buy the 5110 to clear it and here we are. My guess is that I pulled a pin out of the Steering Sensor by accident or have a bad steering sensor.

2016, wheeled hard and put away wet. VSC light on- I added a throttle controller for about a week until I got a dead battery and put me into limp mode. disconnected battery and removed the throttle controller, back to driving but light was still on. Maybe when I was pulling the wires for the controller (Setpower with the remote control switch) I dislodged a pin? Maybe after I gave up on the controller I dislodged a wire out of frustration with the Set Power controller when I was uninstalling it? Seems funny that a Steering Sensor would go out on a 16 with 52K miles.

Copying my reply from another post.

I have a 2022 so I am unable to do the paperclip method. Can confirm the Inova 5210 works to clear the VSC and precollision warning light. I was messing with my camber bolts to get max caster and it threw my toe specs way off. Drove to the alignment shop and the two warning lights turned on. After alignment, drove for about 50 miles and the light still stayed on. Purchased the OBD2 scanner and was able to erase the VSC and precollision warning lights. I believe any OBD2 reader that has an ABS reader function will suffice. Clearing these codes acts as a zero point calibration.

I'm thinking it only the clears the codes and it will pop up again after some additional drive time. Most alignment shops do it as part of the service if they have a updated tool. Dealer is $170 to do it plus $90 for the alignment.
I bought an Ancel and it has capacity to clear the code and reset the SAS (zero point cal )if required. Haven't needed it yet so not 100%.

Hot damn, now I know what that is…

except I don’t get a warning that pops up. Just at times leaving my neighborhood at a hard 90 degree turn it kicks on the traction light for a split second or two and then it’s off.
