Wise choice, I started out as a one man spare hand at age 15 1/2 in a dusty cotton mill. All my kids went to college. I ended up as an engineer but gotta say one of my cotton mill jobs was a favorite job way less pressure than engineering lol.

You don't want the one that MUST be used for school...you want the one that CAN be used for school because if you've got 100K in there in 15 years and the kid gets a full ride...you're buying a LOT of books...

529s and others have benefits also, but I figured, who knows what everything will look like in 18 years, keep their options open.

My wife is very smart. She holds 2 degrees in Geology and Earth Sciences. When we first moved to Bishop she couldn't find anything in her field job wise. To make ends meat she took a job at a local gear shop. She loved that job. Not because it paid well. Not because it was suited to her IQ. Not because it gave her some sort of purpose. Nope. She loved that job because it was pressure and deep thought free. lol

Good for her! The perfect job is the one that doesn’t get in the way of life outside of the job I think. I haven’t had one like that since I was 21. That’s why I want to retire early next year, do things I enjoy and on my own schedule.

Sounds like a UTMA is the way to go. If I understand correctly from the link provided, the scenarios are:

pay for college, or at 18 the beneficiary gains control of the money if not used for college?

18-21, might be state by state? But yes. When they are of age, say 18, you can transfer it to them, when they reach 21, it’s theirs regardless. The ages vary some I think.

My first actual job was 17 and at a recycling plant that followed absolutely zero osha standards. I loved it. Fast paced, good workout, big equipment that I was taught on, and paid under the table. Unfortunately my dumbass saved very little and mostly spent it on drinks and food because...college. Main reason I left was I got tired of the lingering possibility of death or serious injury if you weren't focused and aware 100% of the time you were on the floor and better opportunities. Oh, and an accident that that could have left me with no or a non-functioning left hand. Luckily just a scar came of it

She graduated and went straight into running the Eviro Compliance dept of a mid-size road construction outfit in Santa Cruz. She left that to go run the Eviro dept for the Briggs Mine in the Panamint Valley. IDK how much you know about either of those but neither wants to spend money on complying with EPA regs. It was an uphill battle for 10 years. She deserved her little break. lol

How early are you retiring? I'm hoping to be done by 57 if things work out over the next 10 years.

That’s a good plan you have there. And I can understand the pain your wife went through, my industries heavily regulated as well. I wish I could say I’m retiring early but actually I’m retiring late at age 67. The women on my wife’s side of the family tends to live into their 90’s and I want to make sure she’s good for the rest of her life. I’ve been fortunate to be able to work from home since mid March 2020 so delayed it a year and a half, good situation and let’s me put more money into investments. Would love to retire with a couple mil but just starting on the second not gonna make it lol. But we’ll be good I already get small monthly pension checks from a previous job and when I draw SS it will be enough to live ok. Wife’s a writer and finally some success so that helps too. :)

Gotcha. All 4 of my grandparents lived well into their 90's. If I live very simply I think I'll be able to make it work. Time will tell.

What type of writing does your wife do? I'm always looking for new stuff to read. Since Twain and Vonnegut are dead I've gotten no new material in a while. lol

She writes southern literary fiction, Just had her first novel published. Not a big publisher but very well regarded. I think she’s the best writer I’ve ever read but I’m biased haha. I’d rather stay anonymous but PM me if you want to know the book.

I come from a line of cancerous degenerates. I’m trying to buck the trend by maintaining a healthy BMI, not smoking and treating alcohol like a reward and not a staple.

Sat my fat rear end in it.
Astra has a pretty cool concept with the minimalist launch infrastructure. I haven't played them because there are so many small launch startups right now that there's no way most of them don't end up bankrupt.

This conversation about payload capacity, starting with message 535 on page 27 (can't figure out how to link directly to that message), would give me extra pause.

yeah, when they told us in the livestream that the payload was test ballast PROVIDED by space force.

that’s not the same as taking up an actual payload.

your point about all the new startups and the fact that some, if not most, won’t make it, is spot on.

Not everyone can be spacex, but we can find ways to make money off of all the rest in the meantime.
