4WD Disengage "Knock"!

What the heck is this jarring knocking sound when i disengage the 4wd?

Ive never noticed this before the cold weather set in.

This, do you still have your foot on the gas when you take it out? If so take your foot off the gas.

 

Mine does it, it seems normal to me, everything I have ever owned that was four wheel drive made a similar noise.

 

If it is just one knock (I call it a 'thump') then okay...

Running the front drive shaft, differential, ADD, axles, tires with engine torque is a major deal... so expect something when you go in or out of 4 wheel drive.

 

mine doesn't do it anymore since i got a lift and bigger tires. odd.

 

It won't make the noise if there is no tension in the drivetrain. Disengage while you are coasting on flat ground and it should be silent; maybe just a small "click."

 

Mine used to do the same but since I've been going in and out of 4wd a lot recently driving in the snow it's stopped doing it.

As others have said, if it's a single clunk it's no problem.

 

Let it coast for a sec before you engage or disengage. Clunk means be patient with it.

 

Yeah I usually switch to N first and the clunk does not happen

 

okay, havent posted anything on this site in a minute...went to the store w/ the gf earlier today and wanted to park on top of a snow mound...(gf screaming in my ear, but did it anyways)...LOVE 4WD TACOS!...so we left, and im backing off mount everest..lol..and disengage the 4wd low and ...."BANG"...wtf was that? someone help please!

 

Umm??? Isn't it the same sound as when you first asked? Hasn't everyone told you it is normal and some ways to perhaps lessen the sound?
Did you not first shift from L4 to H4 at a stop and in Neutral (the standard way), then go from H4 to H2 while moving?
