Dealerships should have a balcony to watch mechanics do work.

The dealership where I work has a viewing area. Also the shop is a big open area and the service drive rolls right on through so customers can see everything. But generally they dont come over to the stalls. There was only one occasion when I stopped working on a car becuase he was nit picking everything and dictacting how things where going to get done. I gave him his keys and let him drive out.

Edit: I dont mind people being around just dont like rude people telling trying to tell me how to do my job.

Another edit: it also helps to see the customer it puts faces to the cars we are working on and it also explains certain things.

That's a bold statement from someone that didn't understand the concept to start with.

The San Francisco Toyota shop has a counter along giant windows that look over the service area.

Trust issues with mechanics is NOTHING NEW. 60 Minutes, Dateline, 20/20, local and national news have ALL done stories on shady mechanics over the years whether they are Independent or work for a stealership. Let's be honest mechanics have a reputation for, let's say, being less than honest. Not sure a viewing area is the best idea but he's not totally wrong. Maybe mechanics should start working on changing their reputation instead of bashing those who call them out.

*every* profession has scumbags, but they aren't the norm. If you spent your time to check up on every single professional service that you ever paid for, you'd be better off doing it yourself. I think the best option is to be educated, trust they're doing the right thing, and then verify that it got done right after the fact. Sitting and watching someone work is just going to make things worse.

In the UK you need an annual inspection by a mechanic, they have to have a viewing area for you. Its been that way for years with no issues, personally I liked watching even though I had no idea what they were doing.

Every industry has their share of bad actors. Every one.
Do me a favor... watch and ortho surgery, especially the ones using hammers and saws.
Go to a chicken processing plant. Let me know how long it will take you to eat chicken again.
Go to a big dairy farm and watch the lagoon boat operator work.

Point is, there are shitty people in all the places above, but people don't know because they are not public jobs where regular people watch them work. Nurses, mechanics, police officers and plumbers all have audiences of people who don't know shit about the job being done, then go to social media and get everyone riled up when a mistake is made.
Again, there are bad people everywhere, even priesthood lol but it is hidden so nobody gets excoriated on facebook.

I'd rather have car salesmen mic'd up for when they "go talk to the sales mangers."

They likely don't, they sulk when the wife wears the sexy panties to the office. I'm assuming it has to do with them being glued to the glass at the dealer as the tech works on their precious. It's like everything they do in life, micro managed, shit real men don't worry about like your basic bitch oil change. I guess this is the shit that happens when dad left for a pack of cigarettes and never came back. They end up hovering over mom to make sure that she doesn't put any broccoli in the macaroni and cheese.

We work flat rate and last thing we need is to get into countless conversations slowing us down and lowering our income. We have families to feed and don't have the time to talk about customer vehicles because a customer has the day off . It is also better to have full concentration.

Where are you getting your information from? I'm pretty sure Toyota dealer service departments turn out thousands of happy customers every day.

In the end it means you:

    Really don't value your time
    Are a control freak
    Have trust issues

Spend all day there watching, please, I got other shit to do.

Be prepared to multiply the cost of the service then. Getting useful video of this kind of stuff is very time consuming. Not to mention storing it…

Where do we draw the line? I can I ask my female doctor to give me a video of her finger up my ass during a prostate exam? I need to make sure her fingers are going in deep enough and I need it for my only fans
