Crankshaft sensor malfunction

    I guess that would require taking the valve cover and timing cover off is that correct?

    I would expect it to throw a p0336 (crank sensor range/performance) rather than p0335 (no crank sensor signal) if the timing was off though but I could be wrong.

    I find all of this odd, very odd and having said that I think we need to go back to the very beginning. What was the reason for the timing chain replacment? Toyota parts or ?

    Thinking out loud here... It has been too long ago since I had a 2.4 apart for me to remember if any of those sprockets could be installed backwards or not. I am wondering if it is a situation where the timing sprocket is "off" by the difference between the offsets on the gear it it was put on the crank the wrong way forward. I think that if you could take the crankshaft position sensor out and look at how the "gear" is positioned in the "window"... if it is centered I would think that all is good, if it is offset, maybe we have a problem.

    The other thing that I can think of is the timing wheel for the crank sensor part of the timing chain kit and this is an aftermarket kit, it might not be up to Toyota standards. I have only seen this on aftermarket camshaft sprockets and not crankshaft sprockets, when there is that probelm it throws a cam/crank correlation code.

    Reason for the timing chain replacement was because after I got done with the wheel bearings and took it down off the ramp and started it up I heard this klunk and then I started noticing how the engine was running and I started comparing notes to other peoples descriptions and I could also hear a faint slapping noise on the timing gear cover you know the guy was a quart and a half low on the oil didn't even bother to check the dipstick to make sure that there was enough oil in it number one spark plug wire was not even connected didn't put the bolts back in the fenders on the front for the fenders and the grill left a crescent wrench underneath the Hood by the air conditioning connections like they was going to disconnect the air conditioning hoses which is unnecessary and probably tell me I need a Freon also
