Dealerships should have a balcony to watch mechanics do work.

I guess mechanics will need to make sure they are displaying an ample amount of butt crack when they bend over. Should clear out the viewing area pretty quickly. Seems to work for plumbers.

I’m pretty sure dealerships are charging Toyota for the service time in excessive times that they make up . I went in recently for the 2 year service all it was a tire rotation . Took them 3 fucking hours to do a tire rotation ? And they charged Toyota for 3 hours of shop time . So ya they should provide a video .

Agree that having bystanders watching you work is never fun. I've had the same thing you describe happen to me before too. One time in particular it was as simple as lefty loosey righty tighty...I was loosening a flanged in pipe spool piece. Just got going wrong for a second, luckily the guy standing over me used to do the work so he knows it happens to everyone at some point.
I kind of laughed and gave him my best stupid look, an said I figure it out eventually

Edit to add; not like I was going to start breaking off 1" studs!

so, put a few cameras in each service bay, streaming. You can watch your baby, record as much as you want…

the average idiot would tune out and switch over to dancing cat videos 0:30 into the tech taking off the skid plate.

We recently bought a 5 year old house and know the previous owners pretty well. They told us some stories about the build. The wife, who wasn’t working when the house was being built, was on site all the time checking in on the construction. She caught a ton of errors, mainly the subs not sticking to the design details she and her husband had selected. Obviously part of that blame goes up the chain to the builder/foreman.

I could write a book about all the jobs I’ve hired people to do that were done wrong in important ways. I could also write a less exciting book about folks who did great work and even exceeded expectations. Sometimes people you hire will let you down and sometimes they won’t. You won’t know who you can trust until you’ve worked with them for a while. So, nothing wrong with verifying work being done on a job is or has been done correctly.

Do I want to stand behind a tech and watch him do work on my vehicle that I lack the tools or skills to do myself? Nah. But do I assume it was done right? Nah that’s foolish. I look over every inch of what was done if reasonably accessible and ask all my questions before I leave. I just had my tires rotated and you better believe I checked all the lug nuts when I got home. That’s not elitist, it’s just common sense.

Haven't worked with Toyota but I can tell you that is not how it worked at Ford when I worked there. You could not just bill the manufacture what you wanted. The manufacture only pays the dealer what THEIR book times are for any given job, which is warranty labor. It is a reduced amount of time when compared to standard labor times paid at a lesser rate and the manufacture has the final say if they are going to pay it or not. You basically do the job and then get to beg the manufacture to pay you for it.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Can confirm, warranty pay is abysmal at Toyota. Rare to get a good paying warranty job
