Excellent. I've been playing with stacking lately. I'm gonna play around ( if I can get out ) with several images consisting of in-focus foreground
then in-focus background the milky way and stacking those up.... I have a headlamp I use for flashes of light to color the foreground. Might even
take a shorter foreground exposure or 2 with the parking lights on. Tricky part is finding some star to focus on as the infinity setting for me anyway
has never been at max setting, I have to back off just a hair.

    I love this shit...

In this image I used my Tokina 11-16 and 'painted' the top of that little hill with a swipe of the flashlight.

    Nice shot.

Yeah, I didn't even check focus, live view - compose car - set settings (typically 1250iso 20 seconds for stars), twisted to infinity backed of a little bit, click. it was 60' which was bloody cold for me so snapped this one and one more without the car...

I shoot people for a living and haven't done any personal photography for waaaay to long, just about to move from HI to the mainland to do some traveling so hopefully will be a regular in this thread...

    Love your set up!
Could you tell me about the trailer and tent set up. Also the cost? AIA

It's actually a rental. Owner said the cost was around $18k but that was a few years ago. I was thinking of getting one so decided to try out that setup. Helped I could drive from here in NY to Moab and pick that up outside of Denver too. Great price for anyone looking to rent one around that area. Owner was very helpful and easy to work with.

Yeah, just search overland teardrop or hell even your basic overland trailer and it's crazy how expensive just basic setups are.

    @Tacoman21 @Blindsider

We paid about 5k for this new.. they come completely empty so you can trick it out the way you want.
The wife went nuts in this one and really did a swell job with it on the inside.
    Weighs in around 1,000 pounds.

Inflation is hitting hard, worst than media is reporting. I've been shopping for a camper and the one we want was $20k last year and now it's $25k. Prices will probably never drop but continue to go up. Looks like I'll be using my bed tent for longer than was planned.20210417_150258.jpg

Stacking is really fun. I recommend a software program on Mac called Starry Sky Stacker. Really easy to use and works well. Here’s a few of my night sky shots -

Wow those are excellent. I'm using Affinity and really just started understanding the process. I really want
to get out and take a bunch of images now that I half way know what I'm doing LOL.

I don't use Macs so I'll have to stick with Affinity / Photoshop /

What exactly are you stacking? I had a quick look at that app and it seemed specific to using an equatorial mount to limit movement of stars. Cheers…

here’s the website for the software I’m using. I think you must have been looking at a different app. This is a full fledged Mac software, not just an iPhone/iPad app.
    https://sites.google.com/site/starryskystacker/home

You stack multiple exposures of the same photo. I think for the mountain Milky Way photo I posted, I stacked or combined like 150 different photos to make that.

Right - folks take several images of a subject, in some cases over time using a tracker to keep the camera positioned
at the same point, and then put those images together. It can make for nicer and sharper images.

It's similar to Focus Merging, where someone takes a series ( marco type images ) of an object, ( say a watch ) where each
image is in focus at a different point. By merging the images the result is 1 entire image in nice sharp focus.

It’s really fun! I’ve been into astrophotography for 15+ years now, starting when I worked as a backcountry ranger in Capitol Reef NP. I went out every night and shot there.

Important tip - always have something in the foreground, it helps with the photo a lot.
