Mike in your experience, is the info in the quote true about transmission relearn after a fluid change?

"Don't have to open the thermal valve on Tacomas. However if the idle is fluctuating because the jumper wire is still in, the fluid will warm up too fast & you'll end up draining out too much. End result is its under filled. I work at a dealer & have done hundreds of the fluid checks/adjustments. I've seen only 4 in the last 10 years that's actually properly filled. They're all usually low by 1/2 quart or more. It's a good idea to reset the learned memory after the fluid change to relearn the shifting time. Over time the ecu learns to shift slower because the fluid doesn't have the same viscosity. When you put in new fluid, it still shifts slow, & may slip & burn the friction material in the clutch packs."

I'm no expert. So I don't know if any of that is true or not. I do notice that the idle stabilizes some when the jumper is removed after it's in check mode

 

In my defense....it was probably something I had already put off and hadn't anticipated on frigid temps when I planned it

 

I forgot your temperatures are a little more milder in the winter than ours. I always plan on the cold; if we get a warm week then that's a bonus. I have that 140k BTU kerosene heater for the garage for winter. Gonna need it for all the stuff I gotta do to the beater. Reminds me winter is quickly approaching and I gotta coat the Tacoma's frame...

 

Oh yeah, for sure. It was probably 50° when I planned it.

 

I’m installing an AC unit in my garage later this year. The heat is a problem year round and it prevents me from doing shit for most of the day.

 

Course I just did the math, I average about 5k miles every 4 months which places my next oil change in December. Can't do that in the garage with it closed so I'm gonna have to suffer through that one. Or do the unthinkable and go over 5k miles

 

Did you leave it in until you checked the fluid ?

 

I can handle the heat fine, the cold however... Yea to think I moved back to a cold weather state from the South...

 

I've done it both ways. The last time I pulled the jumper after it went into check mode. It stays in check mode without the jumper until the key is cycled. But I know you k own that

 

At some point this hood/car it came off had a gorgeous paint job. Although now it's just a pain in the f@€king a$$ to remove! There's so many layers!

 

Well FYI we are told to connect those two pins through the scan tool
Says nothing about turning that part off after connecting.

to be honest I’ve check fluid with and without jumping the pins. I really couldn’t see a difference
In a test vehicle.

I can't say I've noticed a difference either. I wonder if the TechStream "shuts off" that portion once it's in check mode even though it's still plugged in?

Guess I could borrow my buddy's TS and do it the real way. Either way, based on the amount of fluid that drains out vs what I put back in...I feel confident I'm getting the level right
