This happened rather suddenly; My aftermarket HU was acting up, so I pulled over while still in my neighborhood to shut off the truck and reset the system…

When I went to restart the truck, the key wouldn’t even turn to ACC; I just got the warning chime. The steering wheel was not locked and the truck was in park.

It’s also worth noting that this one of three OEM keys that came with the truck when it was new, not one of the copies I had made at Home Depot; The truck is a base model with no keyless entry and no chipped key…

Luckily, I keep another of the OEM keys stashed in an undisclosed location on the truck in case I lock myself out or lose the main key. This key started the truck up without issue.

Again, the other key will lock and unlock the door but it won’t start the truck. Any ideas?!?!

On another note, another issue my truck has that I’ve discussed on TW is that none of my OEM keys will lock the driver’s door anymore; They will unlock the driver’s door, and they will both lock and unlock the passenger door, but they will not lock the driver’s door. This has been going on for over five years and I just live with it…

I didn’t think keys could wear out; At least it’s easy to get new ones made at Home Depot…

Hopefully it’s the keys; Would putting new locks in mean rekeying the truck?

yes, they’ll round out over time, so will the pins in lock tumblers.

also copying a crappy key, gives you a copy of a crappy key…

A local locksmith could probably re-key the whole truck for couple hundred bucks, if you wanted to.

Yes, new lock cylinders and keys all around. That is what I would do.

Ignition too? I’m actually willing to deal with the door locking issue on the driver’s side as I can still lock it from the inside; How much do you think it would cost to rekey the truck?

And I wouldn’t have to replace the ignition?

You may was well get the ignition rekeyed to match everything else. You don't have to replace it just get it rebuilt and rekeyed to match the doors.

Find a good locksmith and get an estimate.

Sometimes if you flip the key 180° it will unlock/start. One side of the double side gets more wear than the other.

So I don’t need a mechanic or Toyota tech to rekey the ignition?

no, but don’t buy the cheapest lock sets either, or you’ll be right back where you started in a short time

A good locksmith should be able to take care of everything for you. Toyota Tech / Mechanic not needed.

Unless you want to get boned in the process.
