That looks like a lot of pre-load on the coil. A heavier/longer coil should fix the issue. It'll be a bit stiffer, but will soften with use and if you have weight up front. I recommend the DuroBump front bumps (much better design over OEM and they're beefy) from personal experience. I know a lot of people are pleased with wheeler's bumps, and there may be a few other options.

    * I went from 13x3 in 650lb coils to 14x3 in 700lb coils. Made a night/day difference

Thanks. That’s the odd thing though, the spring is supposed to be 827# and 15” long- according to the Ironman sight and I have it set for under what the max. I have it around 2.25-2.50” lift instead of 3. I didn’t measure the spring while it was off but with no extra weight and those spring specs, it should not be much preload at all… unless I have too much still. But in that case the lift would be too high or the ride unbearable.

I had my eye on the durobumps as well but see they don’t contact, I’ve lowered them in the priority list.

You're gonna want upgraded bumps. It'll ease the impact on your shocks, especially on bottoming out. If you get a higher spring rate, you'll need to add weight in order to soften the ride.

Hello all. I just bought my first Tacoma. Had a 2011 Tundra but didn't drive it. Sold it last year with 47500 on it. Missed having a truck and here I am...
Now making changes to the TRD Sport.

    Question?

What size tires can I get to put on the stock 17" rim without a lift kit, other than leveling the truck?

    I'm in Southern MD

Lifts don't clear tires, so it's really up to your willingness to tweak alignment and trim to determine what size you will make fit. Reasoning behind why lift doesn't clear tires is that at full stuff, the lift amount is irrelevant. Also consider that caster does not necessarily give clearance at the fire wall. + Caster at the lca will give more clearance, but +caster from the uca will actually reduce clearance

I'd say if you're willing to just do a little trimming/stretch fender liner, than 265/75/16 or 265/70/17 is a good place to start

For moderate trimming and body mount chop, 285/75/16 or 285/70/17s are pretty popular choices.

For moderate to decent amount of trimming, 35x10.5 pizza cutters fit pretty wheel in my 4runners wheel wells, and werent really too complicated to get fit right once I trimmed everything up

If you do anything more than the 265 options, I'd suggest pulling the front shocks and cycling the suspension droop to bump and lock to lock with a jack and cut everything that rubs

It makes me wonder if the springs I have on are not really at almost 830lb spring rate. I had been looking at lowering them with maybe the king 3” ID 14” 650 lbs rate ones. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the ride is bad and my cv angles are good. I don’t really need to change anything and my wife says it rides fine.
I do have sliders on order so that will be about 140lbs but won’t help with the front much.

I also saw Sumosprings has a front option for the Tacoma now and they have more height than the others.. well maybe not the duro. I just don’t want to mix too many colors in the wheel well. Blue and green would look a little odd.

If it helps at all, I have 265/75/16’s on my Tacoma. I have the rough country level kit, no lift. The tires don’t rub at all and I probably could have gone with 275’s and been fine as well.

830lb/in is quite a hefty spring rate. I don't really have much added weight up front, but I have 580lb springs and like them.

With springs, an important thing to keep in mine is hooke's law F=kx where F is force (weight), K is the spring rate (like 650lb/in), and x is the spring displacement from equilibrium (preload). Basically what this tells us is that you can support a load with either a higher spring rate OR more preload.

Also consider the spring rate itself is a rate, which the units of lb/in often gets truncated to just lb and that unit doesn't tell the whole story. Rate essentially tells up how easily the spring is compressed. so a 650lb/in spring will take 650lb to compress 1", 1300lb to compress 2", 1950lb to compress 3". Likewise with an 830lb spring: 830lb to compress 1", 1660lb to compress 2", 2490lb to compress 3". the springs aren't 1:1 on the front suspension because of the control arms, but the concept is the same. The takeaway from this is if you don't have a lot of weight up front, but a heavy spring rate, then your springs will not compress much off road and can lead to a tire in the air. Having a lower spring rate coil will allow your suspension to flex easier, and also not be so harsh on road. Heavier spring are more difficult to flex, and could be harsher on road

extended bumpstops rob up travel. Most front suspension setups don't actually extend the front travel, just change static ride height. This is because the articulation is really limited on the geometry and not by the shocks.

imo Preload gets a bad wrap and 700lb springs tend to be overhyped

That is great information. So the Ironman springs that I have now (and the only set offered when I bought them 1 year ago) are 827lbs/in. I can say that I would never truly need a spring rate that high and doubt many Tacoma’s would. See full spring details below. I can see how the extended bump stops would limit up travel but currently, street driving I was not able to get the stock bump stops to make contact. The kinda tells me I should get some “softer” springs. Ironman now offers a 720# spring but with no planned weight that’s probably still too much. It could be that the heavier springs work with the Foam Cells better than the lower rated springs but the nitro shocks IM offers use the same springs.
When I reached out to IM, they said other springs should work as long as they have an inner diameter enough. I didn’t see any other 15” springs in my search. I would need to figure out setting ride height and preload on my own, since I don’t think just moving the spring seat up or down an inch to compensate the new spring size would be enough.

    Material Diameter 18mm
    Free Height 382mm
    End I/D 66/76mm
    Spring Rate 145(N/mm)
    Spring Rate 827(lbf/in)

If they're really squishy and compress all the way down to like the OEM size then they're not robbing up travel. I've just seen some people but taller bumps that don't compress to keep the tires out of the fenders, but that's really just limiting the wheel travel.
