A whine could be multiple things. I don't think it has to do with pinion angle, you'd get druveshaft vibration if that was out of spec.

Whine can come from too little or too much pinion bearing preload which results in a roasted bearing(s). Whine can be from improper pinion depth. Then Whine can be a normal sound with the gear set you have. What may have happened when you changed your suspension is you removed something that was insulating the natural gear noise and now you hear it. Only way to really tell is to pull the diff and do all the checks. Pattern, pre loads, and back lash. If all that checks good, then it is just an insulating property you removed upon the suspension swap. It's def not a bad idea to make adjustments to your drive shaft as well.

    Not a tacoma, but I just re-geared a GC460.

I have broken in for 300 miles now. 20 miles followed by 45 minute cool down. Am I okay to just drive like normal until I change the diff oil at 500 miles?

I have noticed that the vehicle can basically cruise at 10mph or more at idle, and my MPG went up by 1.5 MPG. I switch to larger tires ("33s")

Went head and tuned the truck to the KDmax Regular on 89plus Premium gas. With 5.29s its a huge game changer. It's been a couple of days only but I can confidently say my cheeks hurt from all the smiling. The truck feels lighter then when it was stock. It's holding the gears longer and it feels more powerful through out the entire gear its in. Highway driving feels so much better, no more gear hunting and no more dead pedal. The drivability is greatly improved. Entrance ramps to the highway are fun again.
For those that have re-geared and are still not completely happy with how the truck drives, a tune could be a good option for you to consider.

Initially the gas pedal is little touchy, but after 3 red lights you get the feeling for it. Kinda of like when you drive someones else's car, you have to learn the pedal for a couple stops. It feels like that. It feels like a new truck.

"checks" Does that mean it's worth the money :spending:

Mine is getting done on Tuesday.

Going with Yukon 529 gears. I'm already tuned but will be updating it for the gear change in the very near future.

I really need to get mine tuned. The regear is kinda meh, and the truck really needs more help turning these 35s. I'm hoping a tune will do the trick, otherwise down the road I'm going to have to go the supercharger route.

Have you tried any other tunes or just the KDmax?

Only the KDmax tune. In terms of performance tunes they have been around the longest, the developers are here, easily available, and no mention of issues with the tune thus far. Some of my thought process for getting the tune besides the truck performance. Now they have a 4 tier set up where you can chose how aggressive you like it. I drive super average I'm not roasting tires and I'm not Sunday Grandpa either. It's been 5 days, still smiling.

I recently switched to the valley runner 5.29 tune and have been pretty impressed so far. I was running ovtune 2.0F for about 20,000 miles. This VR tune is awesome! It's not a performance tune but more of a well refined daily driver tune.

If you don't mind, could you explain what exactly it is that you notice is different from 2.0? Pros/cons? I've been on 2.0 and KDMax 6.0 with 5.29's. I like them both but they are totally different. Been interested in the VR tune.

to me, vr feels like it has a little bit more low end torque not a ton but the slight difference. The throttle feels a lot different. Further throttle required to downshift. Truck holds 4th gear a lot longer around town and all gears it seems for that matter. Mpg is up just slightly but I’ve only got 1/4 tank in this far. I switched to light throttle feel as normal was too touchy. Light still feels like more tip in than ovtune to me. Cruise controls been good including adaptive cc. I’ve notice it downshift to 5th and not 4th as much in cc which is pleasant.

Any more low end torque would be great. Throttle/tip in and gear holding sound similar to what KDMax 6.0 does. Only negative I read about is certain instances were the truck gets stuck in 5th gear with wide open throttle and won't shift into 4th. But sounds like they figured out a fix for this. Appreciate the feedback!

My 5:29 have been pushing my POS around town with newly mounted 37’s on beadlocks and the truck isn’t cumbersome or a pain to drive. With my 4.0 and 5spd AT the truck actually doesn’t really miss a beat around town. Averaging about 14.3 city mpg, so stoked on these gears.

If I do 33's and then go 5:29's how far off would my odometer and speedometer be?

the gears won’t effect it the odo. Just the tire size. It will probably be around 3-5 mph off at highway speeds depending on the exact circumference of your tire.

I could be wrong, but gearing doesnt affect odometer and speedometer. That's all in the tire size, which you can easily calibrate to display the correct info.

33’s are an 8% increase. 45MPH x 1.08 = 48.6, 70MPH x 1.08 = 76.6, ect. Speedometer is only affected by tires, not gears. Gauge cluster reads the speed directly from wheel speed sensors, as I understand.

Plug your existing tire size and desired tire size into the tire calculator at the bottom of the page. My circumference was 7% different so I multiply my mileage by 1.07 for the corrected speed or distance traveled
