I doubt those people are really trying to argue other than to say a truck has different driving dynamics as a whole. A factory pickup truck is also not going to hold over 1G on the skidpad nor stop from 60 in under 100 feet, doesnt mean it's shitty.

The highway problem I was referring to was the fact that it was difficult to keep up with traffic when the average freeway speed is well over 75 mph here. Most cops here in Michigan don't bother pulling people over on the freeways unless you're doing more than 10 mph over the posted 75mph. People pass you on both sides if you're only doing 80. No power left at those speeds for passing and the gas mileage was lousy at those speeds since you're running near 3000 rpm or better the entire time. City driving was fine as it scooted around town great. The tranny and the 4wd were both awesome and shifted very smooth. I have a cabin in northern Michigan that I head to almost every weekend from October through New Years (avid bow hunter). That was when I finally got tired of driving the freeway with the 4cyl/5spd manual.

I heard dodge is bringing back the Dakota. Basically is on the same chassis as the Gladiator

never had any issues with above 75. I am below sea level or at sea level most of the time. Maybe that is why?

Ford was also going to make a Bronco Pickup based on the Ranger but canceled it, probably would have made the Ranger obsolete.

Ford didn't want to make all that profit from the Bronco Pickup, and like you said. The Ranger would be obsolete, Bronco PU would probably cut into F150, and Bronco sales.

Ridgeline is looking like the better truck. Today I saw a Ridgeline carrying a canoe, mountain bike hanging off the back, an Ikamper on the roof all while overtaking slower traffic in the left lane during a tropical storm.

I would have bought a full size. The fuel mileage is the same as a big truck. I would have an F150 probably.

To me - a good gearbox gets into gear and clutches in smooth and quick. The Taco MT is a little loose, sloppy, and .. well, is also built to be on a body on frame pickup (with it being attached to the frame mounted transmission) and still perform on bumpy offroad conditions. So .. I'm gonna give something attached to a unibody different standards than something attached to a frame then sticking out through a body on non-rigid mounts (which means it's built to be bounced around and still work).

So yes, 'it's a pickup' actually means something. Unless, of course, that pickup never sees crappy road conditions, then I ask why aren't ya just in a ridgeline.

At the current price that Tacomas sell for? Probably no... From the time I bought my 2017 to now, the price has jumped significantly.

Had a 2010 for 12 years and it did everything I needed. Just bought a 2021 and am happy with it.

I test drove a Ranger and it’s certainly a contender, but the resale on the Tacoma versus the Ranger was simply no contest.

Probably would not. When I bought it I lived in Michigan, and now I live just north of downtown Los Angeles. To say the parking and driving situation is different here would be a bit of an understatement. The Tacoma is not the worst vehicle for LA traffic and parking, but it wouldn’t be my first pick. However, I’m writing this while visiting Zion, UT, and I honestly don’t think I’d rather have anything else when exploring the great outdoors of the Southwest. Every time I go out and get a little dirt on the tires I remember why I love it, so I don’t think I’ll be trading it in anytime soon.

The Ridgeline did better driving into Death Valley on washboard than the Tacoma with the Bilstein shocks,

Still wouldn't get a Ridgeline either. Your ridgy couldn't follow me offroad if your life depended on it. They belong at the mall.

Haha no Ridgeline for me, ever. It does work for some people, rough roads its fine, off-roading no.

    * If you were buying today, would you still choose the Tacoma? Why?

    Probably not.

    * If not, why? What would you buy instead? Why?

A used full sized pre EGR diesel truck for my truck need and a lightly used LJR for off-roading.

    * What problems have you had that disappointed you in the Tacoma?

Smoking when idling on an incline. Finicky rear locker engagement. Sensitive actuators.

    * Were these issues significant enough to cause you to doubt the reliability of the truck?

Yes. We off-road a lot. It’s become something we have to always be aware of. Worried about it’s effect on the longevity of the motor.

    * What other trucks did you look at before buying the Tacoma?

    ZR2

    * What did you like & dislike about them?

Vulnerability of the ZR2 multimatic suspension. Chintzy interior. Bed height.
