i have a 08 pre runner and i just recently saw that i have a busted front axle boot. i was getting it inspected and the mechanic saw it during his inspection and he told me that the only way to fix it was to replace the entire axle. i would just like to know if anyone else has had this problem and if they know that you can just replace the boot or something cheaper because i have a feeling that the mechanic was probably trying to cheat me on that but i really dont know. if you do have to get the entire axle does anyone know where to get them for pretty cheap, but not used?

did you tear the left side or the right side of the CV Boot? its alittle cheaper to fix the CV boot but requires alot for work to do. so they rather replace the axle instead. if you tore it for awhile now and dint know and kept on drivng it with without the grease lubbing it, i would recommend relacing the axle instead. cause you mght of did some damage to it. I went through the same thing.

Must be the steering rack boot he's talking about.

But you wouldn't need to replace the axle for that.

i tore the passenger front, and it is the left one i suppose, the one that is closer to the engine. i found it quick and the axle is still alright as of now.

okay, so i messed up by saying pre runner, i have a 4wd 4 cylinder and it is the axle boot, it is the side of the boot closest to the motor. front passenger side axle. the axle is still good but it probably isnt going to be for much longer because i live in west virginia and all the salt on the roads for ice is probably screwing up some stuff in my axle.

Yeah. I would rather fix the whole passanger axle. Its gonna be like maybe 50.00 more but i would rather go that way than just fixing the boot because later down the road if u do need to fix that axle its going to cost u again. So just make it easier on u and fix it right the first time.
